Moonlight Chicken (2023) is a Thai BL series. The story progresses through the relationship established by Jim, who tries to earn a living in a small chicken diner, with Wen, who suddenly enters his life. The series is in a realistic structure that we rarely see in Thai BLs. You will see more of real Thai life, its streets, and its people. It is not a sterile story; this is pleasing.

Moonlight Chicken (2023): Plot and Synopsis

The plot and synopsis of Moonlight Chicken (2023) are as follows: Struggling with economic difficulties, Jim runs a small chicken diner with his nephew Li Ming. One night, he meets Wen, a drunk customer. An unexpected intimacy occurs between them that night.

While Jim tries to keep the diner afloat on one hand, he cannot predict what will happen with this mysterious man who suddenly entered his life on the other. Li Ming, however, rejects this narrow and poor life; he wants to build his future outside of Thailand.

Wen starts working at the diner over time and becomes more involved in Jim’s life. But Jim is shaken when he learns a truth: Wen is actually an architect working on a project to restructure the area where the diner is located. This situation drives a wedge between them. For Jim, who has experienced the pain of love before, trusting was already difficult in itself, and now things have gotten thoroughly complicated.

Meanwhile, Li Ming meets a hearing-impaired boy named Heart in the house where he is forced to work. A different yet warm bond is formed between them. Li Ming’s dreams of leaving the country start to be questioned after meeting Heart. However, in the shadow of all these developments, both Jim’s and Li Ming’s relationships will be tested. Amidst the past, class difference, broken hearts, and disappointments, everyone searches for a path in their own way.

Wen is an architect with a good career in the city; however, he feels lonely even in the middle of a crowd. Jim, on the other hand, is running away from his past, afraid to open his heart again. The bond between them develops slowly but deeply. Wen’s honesty and emotional openness shake Jim’s walls. Meanwhile, Jim’s nephew Li Ming tries to discover his own identity and gain his freedom. The delicate, innocent relationship he forms with Heart constitutes a second emotional axis of the series—a story full of youth, silence, and the purity of first love.

Jim and Wen approach each other in the shadow of society, the past, and their own fears. Both realize that love can be experienced not only in youth but also after resentments. Li Ming and Heart, on the other hand, try to express themselves in a world full of obstacles. These two parallel stories establish an intergenerational bond: one is full of the burden of the past, the other with the hope of the future.

The final episode is an acceptance rather than a farewell. While Jim faces his past and opens his heart again, Wen also finds the place where he belongs at the end of his own journey. Love is always and everywhere.

Series Review and Comments

Thai BL series mostly revolve around the lives of wealthy youths in luxury. Thai youth boys’ love productions take place in a sterile environment and a world of pink dreams. But there is no artificial story in this series. There is a simpler, more real narrative. There are real neighborhoods, streets, and emotions emerging from ordinary people. I love this reality and naturalness. Because the events and impressions we encounter in real life are more impressive. For those looking for a more human narrative without getting stuck in clichés, it can be an average but sincere experience.

Moonlight Chicken is a production that magnifies love and romance with its social and emotional reality. Thanks to the mature acting of the EarthMix duo, the feeling that love is an emotion belonging not only to youth but to every stage of life is indeed very strong. I hope you can feel this power.

Cast and Characters

While Jim learns to trust again through Wen; Wen discovers the true meaning of a sense of belonging thanks to Jim. The balance between them is like silent proof of the idea that “love does not depend on age, time, or social expectations.”

  • Earth Pirapat Watthanasetsiri (Jim): The diner owner, a man who has isolated himself from the world after the heartbreaks he experienced in the past. He is a responsible, quiet, but emotionally deep character. Accepting love again turns into an act of courage for him.
  • Mix Sahaphap Wongratch (Wen): A successful architect, but internally lonely and indecisive. Meeting Jim drags him into a search for meaning beyond his career. He discovers that love comes with honesty, and belonging comes with emotional openness.
  • Fourth Nattawat Jirochtikul (Li Ming): Jim’s nephew. He questions his identity in the transition to adulthood with a quest for freedom. He represents a young soul trying to overcome the boundaries of society.
  • Gemini Norawit Titicharoenrak (Heart): A quiet, sensitive boy. The bond he forms with Li Ming is woven with emotions rather than words. He represents a different language of loving with his silence.
