Unforgettable Japanese BL Series #2: Top New Generation Dramas

Beyond Clichés: A Curated Guide to Sincere and Aesthetic Modern J-BL.

Japanese BL (Boys’ Love) series always hold a special place. I can say they stand somewhere between Thailand and K-BL. I like their simple narration along with manga adaptations, social, and psychological subtexts. However, filtered faces and excessive makeup are present in J-BL as well. Idol actors can sometimes be artificial. But here, I have prepared new and modern boys’ love stories.

I focused on more general stories rather than just a shy high school love or a university campus theme. I hope you like these series.

🏳️‍🌈 🇯🇵 In addition to this guide, you might want to explore the first collection of cult Japanese BL series I curated for you; it captures the very roots of the genre’s aesthetic.

Modern Japanese BL Series Recommendations: The Newest and The Best

The list below proves how proficient Japanese BL series have become not only in romance but also in drama, comedy, and slice of life genres. Thailand productions, the locomotive of the BL world, are followed immediately by K-BL and J-BL. While witnessing a communication overcoming obstacles with Hidamari ga Kikoeru on this list, you will watch the sweet rivalry in the business world with Cosmetic Playlover. Whether you look for a deep drama or a heartwarming romance; you will love the series on this list, you can be sure of that.

Jack o’ Frost – ジャックフロスト (2023)

Between Love and Memory

The Japanese BL series Jack o’ Frost focuses on an emotional relationship developing through memory loss. Not just a dry BL, this production in a manga vibe with LGBT themes is a high-quality BL series with its visual narration and simple plot. Is it possible to draw close again with someone who doesn’t remember that you are lovers? Jack o’ Frostpresents this question with both its romantic and dramatic aspects.

Illustrator Ritsu and his lover Fumiya met in a cafe years ago, deepened their relationship in a short time, and started living in the same house. However, a detachment surfaced in their relationship over time. That warm bond they initially shared with love left its place to indifference and disagreements. Especially Fumiya thinks that Ritsu is no longer interested in him as before, and that no common ground remains. When their love-filled union begins to be overshadowed by restless arguments, separation feels inevitable.

One day, Fumiya cannot hide his feelings any longer and tells Ritsu that he wants to break up. However, Ritsu cannot handle this news; he experiences a traffic accident on the night he rapidly leaves the house. Suffering from temporary memory loss after the accident, Ritsu does not remember what happened that night, or even his lover Fumiya. Nevertheless, despite everything, they continue to live together.

What is interesting is that Ritsu’s amnesiac state seems to have brought back his old interest and warmth. Now Ritsu approaches Fumiya not merely like a lover, but almost like a sincere, interested, and curious friend from the first days they met. Together, they trace the tracks of memories anew; they go to the cafe where they met, eat food together, and repeat the things they used to enjoy in the past. Fumiya, on the other hand, tries to get to know this new Ritsu with the tracks of the past and his still-hurting heart.

Jack o’ Frost is in a simple and slow-progressing structure, and I can say this sometimes makes it difficult to watch the series. Although it is not satisfying for those expecting high production or action, I liked the series. If you are interested in emotional stories, just watch the series and let it go! Especially if you are someone who loves watching love relationships accompanied by dramatic elements like memory loss, this production is just for you.

I Cannot Reach You – 君には届かない (2023)

Kimi ni wa Todokanai or with its international name I Can’t Reach You, is an 8-episode Japanese BL series broadcasted in 2023. Consisting of episodes of approximately 30 minutes, the series is adapted from the popular manga of the same name. The gay love story developing through a childhood friendship in high school years is treated with an extremely simple and serene narration. But I must say that the series is quite cliché. You might have watched similar series. However, I loved the emotional intensity and character psychologies in this series. For this reason, I took it to the site and to this list.

At the center of our story taking place in high school are two childhood friends: Ohara and Ashiya. The duo has almost not separated since their infancy; they studied in the same schools and spent time in the same classes. This tight bond has been carried up to the high school years.

Ohara is the popular student of the school. Outgoing, attractive, possesses high self-confidence, and constantly attracts the attention of girls. However, in a strange way, he constantly turns down this interest. Because there is someone else in his heart: his childhood friend Ashiya.

Ashiya, on the other hand, is someone more introverted, quiet, who doesn’t attract too much attention. He is as if remaining in the shadow of Ohara within the friend group as well. But he also begins to feel different emotions toward Ohara. However, whenever these feelings blossom, Ashiya cannot save himself from feeling like “Ohara’s go-between boy.” Being in a position of someone conveying the dating proposals coming from girls to Ohara bothers him.

Between these complicated emotions, the relationship of the two youths changes gradually. Jealousy, misunderstandings, small tensions, and various states of love are narrated in a quite simple but touching way. You will also love this narration, I am sure of that.

This series is far from complex intrigues and dramatic outbursts. It is not a heavy drama, nor is it an entertaining comedy. We rather watch the emotional drawing closer developing slowly between two youths. It is not a bad drama.

My Personal Weatherman – 体感予報 (2023)

A BL story full of romantic tension and sweet chaos, telling the strange and passionate relationship between a famous weather presenter and a shy mangaka. A production with a familiar but plain narrative that handles themes of addiction, trust, and surrender in modern love. This J-BL drama must definitely be on your watch list.

The complex relationship between popular weather announcer Mizuki and introverted manga artist Yoh deepens as they start living together. Mizuki’s cold manners and Yoh’s suppressed emotions turn into a fluctuating love story. The series ends with the duo reaching emotional maturity and accepting their love.

Yoh and Mizuki’s opposite characters create a relationship dynamic that reveals both the protective and liberating aspects of love. My Personal Weatherman offers a plain and realistic experience for BL viewers who love manga adaptations.

Bokura no Shokutaku – Our Dining Table – 僕らの食卓 (2023)

Our Dining Table (Bokura no Shokutaku) is a 10-episode manga adaptation of a 2023 Japanese production, a sincere BL series telling about love, loneliness, and the healing power of meals. The story is very warm and of course, big conflicts are narrated in a quite simple language.

There are no deep philosophies or big conflicts in the series. But there is sincerity, empathy, and bonds forming slowly. Taking place in the kitchen, Our Dining Table will be quite an ideal production for those who want to watch a slow-flowing but warm BL series. Of course, on my condition of not exaggerating: it shouldn’t be praised that much, it has an average story, but I liked it.

A Story Starting with a Rice Ball

Yutaka is a quiet, introverted office worker who has difficulty in communicating with people. He eats his lunches alone in the garden accompanied by handmade onigiri (rice ball). His expectation from life is not very big; he is accustomed to his lonely life. Until one day a small child, Tane, sets his eyes on his food.

Yutaka shares his food with Tane, then meets the child’s older brother Minoru. This acquaintance will transform first into a friendship starting under the pretext of food, and then into a bond growing accompanied by meals cooked together.

As Yutaka spends time with Minoru and little Tane, he begins to confront his past traumas related to food, fear of loneliness, and problems of establishing sharing with people. And of course, at one point among the food recipes, he reaches the recipe of the heart…

Is Our Dining Table Worth Watching?

This production is not one of those BL series progressing with “high-tension, screaming scenes.” Here, I threw shade at Thailand BL dramas 🙂 It is a series progressing slowly but digesting thoroughly, whose viewing pleasure is calm but emotional. Especially Japan’s minimalist narration style feels itself strongly here.

The food theme is not just a backdrop, it plays an active role in the characters drawing closer to each other. Emotions are like a recipe: stirred slowly, then cooked on low heat. I can say what makes the series important is the family warmth and the tight bonds formed. Food serves as a catalyst just for family and romance.

The response to the question: yes, the series is worth watching. It will offer an above-average “food”—pardon, viewing experience.

Our Youth – 未成年~未熟な俺たちは不器用に進行中~ (2024)

The Unfinished Meeting of Quiet Confessions

This 2024 production Japanese BL series is adapted from the webtoon of the same name, and I can say it is a bit different from the typical “rich boy love” cliché. Miseinen: Mijukuna Oretachi wa Bukiyo ni Shinkochu consists of 11 episodes of 30 minutes. It harbors deep emotional layers under the BL, school, and youth themes. For this reason, I added the series to my list. If you want to go slightly beyond simple BL formulas, the series is completely for you. Watch it and let it go!

The cinematography and location selection are quite good and in place. With real locations and everyday life scenes, it takes the viewer out of the sterile reality of luxury apartments and invites them to a more feet-on-the-ground atmosphere. This also makes the story of the characters more believable and human.

The character at the center of the series, Minase Jin, is a quiet, hardworking student living almost in the shadow of his mother. His life is shaped by the expectations and controls of his mother. School, friends, and future plans—all of them have to pass through the mother’s approval. In the midst of this suffocating order, Minase’s path intersects with Hirukawa Haruki, known as the “troubled boy” of the class.

Haruki is seemingly an aggressive, repulsive, and dangerous type. But over time, it comes to light what a fragile, lonely, and abused child lies behind these shells. The two youths first help each other in a coincidental manner. Then a friendship starts between them. However, this friendship causes Jin to question his own feelings over time. The romantic feelings blossoming inside him toward Haruki conflict both with the boundaries drawn by his mother and with his own fears.

As Jin notices the domestic violence in Haruki’s house, an invisible bond forms between the two. Now he not only understands Haruki; he also finds a reason to take control of his own life for the first time. Haruki, on the other hand, sees the warmth and acceptance he has been waiting for for years in Jin. The series tells how these two youths slowly hold onto each other, how they transform their fears, and how they become light to each other’s darkness.

This series treats themes such as loneliness, social pressure, family trauma, and the fragility of youth. At the same time, if you are one of those viewers complaining about the lack of emotional depth and reality in BL series, take this production onto your list.

Hidamari ga Kikoeru – ひだまりが聴こえる (2024)

The purest form of love is sometimes hidden in merely trying to hear each other. The series tells of love blossoming from a friendship that makes the voice of the heart stronger than words.

Kohei is a youth who has become lonely due to hearing loss and rejoins society with Taichi’s help. As the bond between them deepens, Kohei struggles to confess his feelings, and Taichi’s realization of his emotional void complicates their relationship. Finally, Kohei learns to express his feelings openly, and Taichi understands that love is conveyed through presence.

Hidamari ga Kikoeru is a love story born within silence. Kohei and Taichi’s relationship is built on acceptance of differences and understanding.

Perfect Propose – パーフェクトプロポーズ (2024)

The manga-adapted Perfect Propose is a short Japanese BL series of 2024 production. Consisting of a total of only 6 episodes and each episode lasting approximately 24 minutes, this mini-series is of the kind that can be finished in one sitting. It treats themes such as gay love, childhood friendship, a demanding work life, and slowly developing emotional intimacy.

I can say that I saw the “shy but cute” lead dynamic, which I frequently encounter in Japanese production BL series, here as well. However, this series offers a simple and soft flow instead of big dramatic explosions or cliché romantic scenes. For this reason, it carries a complete J-BL characteristic.

Perfect Propose centers the story of Hiro, who is quite slow in his job and generally exhausted from life. Hiro’s only activity, who cannot sleep at nights and cannot mix into life during days, is going to work and trying to do the jobs loaded onto him by his cruel boss. At the place he works, he is almost both a scapegoat and a working machine. Precisely in the middle of this weary life, his childhood friend Kai Fukaya, whom he hasn’t seen for a long time, knocks on his door.

The place Kai worked has closed down, his boss fell ill—meaning life hit him to the shore too. He desperately wants to move in with his old friend Hiro. However, this moving in ceases to be just a matter of “housemate partnership” and evolves slowly into another dimension. Kai cooks meals for Hiro, encourages him to sleep regularly and feed well. Meaning he becomes a lifeblood to Hiro’s lost life, in a way.

The tracks of the past accompany the series too. They remember the small promises they made to each other as children, and slowly those promises begin to fill up with emotions. Love here is not sudden; it is like a spring coming softly. There are no big moves or melodramatic crises in the series. With this aspect, it offers a story closer to real life.

However, is everything this simple? Yes. The series is constructed quite simply. Supporting characters, conflicts, or sub-stories are almost non-existent. It focuses entirely on Hiro and Kai’s relationship.

A light but watchable, sincere youth BL series.

Takara no Vidro – タカラのびいどろ (2024)

The 2024 production Japanese BL series Takara no Vidro, adapted from the manga of the same name, offers a short but emotional youth story of 11 episodes. The series, built upon gay love, school environment, longing for the past, and the theme of “love at first sight,” is a familiar but pleasant experience for BL lovers. The duo of a cool character suppressing his emotions + a cheerful, determined lover, which we frequently see in Japanese production BL series, appears before us here as well.

Taishin has never forgotten the mysterious stranger who crossed his path during a difficult moment of his life years ago and consoled him with a smile. Setting out from Fukuoka to start university in Tokyo, the track of that past is still inside Taishin. While saying new school and new friendships, on his first day, he notices that the person appearing before him while touring the clubs is that old acquaintance.

This person is Takara, the most popular, most unattainable student of the school. Cool, distant, and with almost no smile on his face, Takara is the center of attention of the whole school. But Taishin is sure that he is the person who consoled him years ago and does not leave his side.

Their relationship develops slowly and sincerely. As the emotions Takara hides behind his tough shell come to light, the viewer expects with curiosity whether this love will blossom or not.

Is the Series Worth Watching?

I will call it a snack-like production for Japanese BL drama enthusiasts who do not look for too much depth. Especially within the field of interest of manga lovers. A light romance and again an underexaggerated dramatic theme; watch the series if you love school and youth themes. Since it is snack-like, it will leave a temporary pleasure in your memory. But Japanese productions offer simple and easy viewing, you know this already.

At 25:00 in Akasaka – 25時、赤坂で (2024)

The 2024 production Japanese BL series At 25:00 in Akasaka (25 Ji, Akasaka de) is a 10-episode series adapted from the manga of the same name. Being approximately 25 minutes each episode, this production treats the love blossoming behind the scenes and the emotions hidden in the acting world. Cliché themes belonging to the BL (Boys’ Love) genre are on stage here too: celebrity + fan, the actor hiding his love—the production progressing according to its theme is in a familiar but watchable structure. I took it onto my list for this reason as well.

Love Starts with the Stage, Continues with Reality…

Shirasaki is a young actor who has been trying to gain a place in the acting world for a long time, showing up in small roles. His biggest dream is to play a lead role one day and do the job he loves with passion. His another dream is to take part in the same project with the famous actor Hayama Akasaka. His paths cross one day with Akasaka, whom he has been a fan of and known secretly since high school years.

Winning the auditions made for a lead role in a new BL series, Shirasaki finally finds a chance to take part in the same project with Akasaka. However, things are not as simple as they seem. Akasaka is an actor who is both distant and does not reveal his emotions easily.

Throughout the series, the relationship on stage begins to reflect on real life over time too. The attraction between them deepens not only before the camera but behind the camera as well. But as in every BL series, the balance gets disrupted with the involvement of a third character into this love journey. Along with jealousy, rivalry, and the revelation of emotions, love games will change too.

Cosmetic Playlover – コスメティック・プレイラバー (2024)

Cosmetic Playlover is a 2024 Japanese production BL drama touching upon unexpressed and internalized emotions, ranging from high school to the business world. For this reason, I loved the story too. This BL is adapted from Narashima Sachi’s loved manga. This mini-series centers the love of two youths working in the cosmetics sector, born out of business rivalry. Lasting a total of 8 episodes, the series sincerely presents themes of work partnership and love left unfinished in the past. For this reason, it has a story that can be watched among J-BL youth series.

The Path Extending from Makeup to Love

Interested in the cosmetics and makeup world since his childhood, Natsume manages to turn this passion into a profession in his adulthood. Working as a consultant at a cosmetics brand, Natsume is dedicated to his job, disciplined, and quite hardworking. However, his stars do not quite align with Toma, a former model and currently a quite popular makeup expert working together in the same company.

Toma is the apple of the eye of the company, the favorite of customers, an impressive employee. Seemingly self-confident and distant, he has feelings toward Natsume that he has hidden for a long time. Over time, the interest he feels toward Natsume does not only push professional boundaries, but an emotional intimacy starts between the two as well. These two employees, initially cautious and insecure toward each other, will have to both rise in their jobs and manage the bond between them.

While treating a romance born out of rivalry, the series also presents social relations in the office environment and personal developments to the viewer in a sweet language. In this respect, it is a minimalist and colorful drama. The story will continue from where it left off in the second season.

Love Is a Poison – 毒恋~毒もすぎれば恋となる~ (2024)

Love Is a Poison (2024) Japanese BL series is a novel-adapted series. It has a plot that can be counted outside classic boys’ love themes. Gay love comes this time together with justice, law, and the profession of attorneyship. Again, a romance born out of the clash of opposite personalities will be waiting for you. Of course, tension is also at its peak. I can say it is a watchable J-BL.

The Japanese production drama contains familiar Japanese BL themes for the viewer. Both the acting, shootings, and locations are quite natural. Of course, the BL drama viewer must be accustomed to luxury locations and excessively made-up actors.

Although the BL novel-adapted series is separate from accustomed youth, school gay love themed series with its theme of mature and job-owning individuals, you can be sure that you have watched its similarities. In novel-adapted series, the main plot and text mostly cannot be reflected on the silver screen.

Shiba Ryoma, who does his job very well, graduated from school with the best degree, and is popular in the law firm he works at, is on one hand in a search for a partner. The successful attorney, who is quite meticulous and does not accept mistakes, wins every lawsuit he takes.

Shiba Ryoma is someone who lives alone and has almost no life other than his job with his strict rules. Right here, he will meet someone new. While researching a social media fraud lawsuit, he meets Haruto. Haruto does not leave Shiba Ryoma’s side and offers to live with him and become his new partner.

Shiba Ryoma, as someone who hasn’t experienced romance before, gets influenced by Haruto and begins to feel something for him. Meanwhile, the successful attorney, who actually learns that this new friend is a member of a fraud syndicate, gets influenced by him unknowingly and falls for his charm while wanting to use Haruto in his lawsuit.

In the progressive chapters, will there be love and trust between the two as viewers? Or is this union an impossible union for both of them? You will find the answers to these questions.

When It Rains, It Pours – ふったらどしゃぶり (2025)

When It Rains, It Pours 2025 (Futtara Doshaburi) production progresses in a serene and calm structure as a Japanese BL series. I always love this structure. The drama treats universal themes such as loneliness, failed relationships, and unrequited love. For this reason, I think it is worth watching too. The series consists of 7 episodes and each episode lasts approximately 25 minutes.

In a way that feels quite familiar to the BL viewer, the series progresses at a calm pace. Dialogues are serious, the atmosphere is introverted and dramatic. The visual atmosphere is impressive, but acting performances generally remain at an average level. Futtara Doshaburi is more suitable for those looking for emotional intensity, not with high expectations.

One of the main characters, Nakarai Sei, lives in a relationship whose entire bond with his lover is now almost broken. Although they share the same house, the distance between them is not only physical but emotional too. Now their sexual union does not remain, and the couple sleeps in separate beds. As Nakarai thinks about the idea of marriage, the void inside him grows. His lover frequently leaves the house and does not return for a long time.

On the other hand, Hagiwara Kazuaki harbors a platonic love toward his housemate, with whom he has lived after losing his family. However, this love is unrequited and consumes him from the inside over time. Hagiwara, just like Nakarai, drifts within emotional loneliness.

One day, Nakarai accidentally sends an email to an unrecognized employee at the workplace. This person is Hagiwara Kazuaki. This digital communication starting by mistake transforms into a friendship in a short time and later into an emotional bond. Without knowing who each other are, both begin to share their loneliness, relationships, and deadlocks in life through these correspondences.

Well, where will this accidental email dialogue go? Will the duo prefer to continue with their lovers, or to take a step toward each other? Or will this friendship remain just as an internal consolation?

10 Things I Want to Do Before I Turn 40 – 40までにしたい10のこと (2025)

By overcoming love, commitment, and age difference, the series based on a manga adaptation, which tells about the characters discovery of their identities and surpassing themselves to live as they are, offers an enjoyable experience to its audience.

Tojo Suzume, who is about to turn 40, is a successful senior at work but lonely in his love life. When young colleague Tanaka Keishi sees the 10-item list prepared by Suzume, he starts to show interest in him. Suzume realizes that Keishi is gay, and the relationship between them continues with Suzume’s changing lifestyle and discovery of love.

The BL series adapted from the manga titled “40 Made ni Shitai 10 no Koto,” while handling themes of self-discovery, love, and commitment, emphasizes the beauty and sincerity of love despite the age difference.

The End of The World With You – 僕らのミクロな終末 (2023)

A youth story full of love and trust blooming in the shadow of the apocalypse. Combining disaster, love, and romance, the drama offers an emotional story about the importance of living and love with its minimalist style. A production you should add to your watch list.

As a disaster threatening the world approaches, Masumi and his ex-lover Ritsu reunite. They try to leave their past traumas behind and spend their last days together. The End of The World, With You (2023) series tells the relationship where Masumi and Ritsu’s different personalities complement each other and the emotional bonds developing in the disaster scenario.

The Journey to Killing You (2025)

A Japanese BL Story Born Amidst Mafia and Crime

The Journey to Killing You (2025) is a crime-oriented Japanese BL that manages to rise above the usual “mafia romance” clichés with its minimalist style. While the battle for a crime empire’s inheritance sets the stage, the real tazyik (pressure) lies in the psychological development and impressive inner worlds of the characters. Odajima’s blank stares and suppressed anger are particularly striking, offering a deep narrative that will especially resonate with those who have read the original manga.

The story follows an assassination mission that turns into an emotional discovery as Kataoka and Odajima face the chaos of their shared journey. Despite some minor leaks in the mafia theme and the physical realism of the combat, the cinematography and the healing power of their bond make it worth watching. If you appreciate the sincere, quiet, and profound aesthetic of Japanese BL stories, this 6-episode mini-series will be a quick and satisfying addition to your list.

School Trip: Joined a Group I’m Not Close To (2025)

An Unexpected Youth Romance

School Trip: Joined a Group I’m Not Close To (2025) is a minimalist high school BL that stays fresh by avoiding common clichés like the school roof. The story follows Asahi, a quiet boy who is unexpectedly pulled into the school’s most popular group by the “tough” Tsukasa. It’s a simple journey of an ordinary student finding his place among the elite.

The core of the drama is Tsukasa’s genuine interest in Asahi’s quiet honesty, a relief for someone tired of superficial popularity. Their romance develops through sincere moments and flashbacks, focusing on character chemistry rather than loud drama. It’s a very plain, Japanese-style narrative that values emotional depth over typical popularity tropes.

If you enjoy the aesthetic of J-BL high school romance, this series perfectly meets that demand with its grounded storytelling. It’s a solid “one-and-done” pick that captures the theme so well you won’t need to watch another similar drama for a long time. It’s simple, short, and effective for any fan of the genre.

Chosen Home (2025)

A Heartwarming Story of Identity, Belonging, and Found Family

Chosen Home (2025) is a Netflix production that asks a fundamental question: Do you really need a blood bond to build a home and become a family? Far from the typical fan-service J-BLs filled with makeup and empty aesthetics, this drama offers a sincere look at LGBTQ+ identity and the courage to live as your true self. While The Fosters remains the legend of this genre for me, this series stands out with its realistic portrayal of a high school teacher and a man who step up to provide a safe “home” for a girl abandoned by her own parents.

The story weaves a complex but heartwarming web involving a missing mother, stolen money, and a “fake father” arrangement that slowly turns into a genuine romance between two men. It’s not just about gay visibility; it’s about the universal struggle of being accepted and shedding conservative prejudices to live in peace. The emotional depth peaks when a young student discovers his own identity through their guidance, realizing that being yourself is neither a sin nor a crime, but a journey toward inner freedom.

What I love most is how the production stays grounded, avoiding exaggerated acting and ultra-luxury settings to show the real streets and homes of Japan. The middle-aged leads are far more “sweet and pure” than the usual polished idols, delivering a story that feels alive and authentic. If you’re tired of repetitive clichés and want a drama that explores the sacrifices and beauty of a chosen family, this one definitely belongs on your must-watch list.
