Love upon a Time (2026) Saving a Past Life and Breaking Society’s Prejudices

Time travel themed Thai BL drama

Love upon a Time takes its place among the Thailand-made BL series of the 2026 production. There is time travel and, in addition to this, mystery. As a matter of fact, the novel-adapted drama (Love Upon a Time ภพเธอ – by author littlebbear96) is not devoid of containing quite cliché elements either. The last Thailand BL series I watched with the theme of fantastically going back in time must be Reset (2025). However, in this series, our main character goes 400 years back into the past.

Aside from youth love and gay romance, if there is a subtext to be read in the series in my opinion, it would be homophobia and social and family pressures. I will mention these topics below anyway. In short, I watched the series from time to time; although I don’t generally like boys’ love dramas with this type of fantastic time travel feature that goes to very, very ancient times, this series is both funny and harbors a little bit of mystery. I can say that the emotional development of the gay characters and the heteronormative pressures also attracted my interest; now, the details.

✅ My Suggestion: The best Thailand BL series worth watching

Love upon a Time (2026) A Mini Summary and Plot Flow

University student Nakhun lives together with his mother and is a quite unlucky character. The series starts right at this point in a quite active and funny manner. What a teacher says in class regarding time and alternative lives is also very interesting. What the teacher says about the connection of time and the past with the future tries to add a tiny piece of mystery in our opinion, but it has no scientific aspect whatsoever; it is highly probable just to reinforce the foundation of fantasy.

There is Nakhun going to a fortune teller together with his friends. The fortune teller, or someone who appears at first to be like a spiritual companion of the fortune teller, says things again about the past, about the connection of the past with the future. Up to here, the series stands like a university campus youth production taking place in the present day, but all of a sudden, things are turned upside down.

Now, we have a brand new time travel theme surfacing. Whether Nakhun receives a blow to his head or not, we don’t exactly know, but suddenly he finds himself four centuries in the past. All of his university friends take place here. The interesting part of the job is that in the past time, Nakhun’s name is Klao.

Well, what is he doing 400 years ago in the past, and what is his purpose for coming here? Klao is someone wealthy and noble here. His father gets punished with crimes like unjust illicit drug trafficking. Klao is also eliminated in some way; it looks highly probable that he was murdered. However, Klao, who suddenly teleports to the past time, encounters a new world here.

His university friend from the present day, Tinnaphop, is the child of a noble family here, and his name is Phop. Actually, there is a love between the two; they love each other in a real sense, but they have to hide this. Anyway, in the progressive episodes of the series, we will watch the duo rediscover each other gradually. Klao will try to adapt to his new life here slowly. He already has two purposes here: the first is to eliminate the injustice his father suffered in the past time and to clarify his own murder, and of course, to strengthen the bond between him and his lover.

There is also a supporting characters—or rather a second—story, which is the past relationships of the characters Pun (Kaew) and Thi (Jom) from the present day. There is a romance between Kaew and Jom too, but this duo cannot draw close to each other somehow. Jom, who practices medicine, never responds to Kaew’s love due to his career and social pressures.

Review and Commentary

Now I want to give the response to the question of whether the series is worth watching. It is necessary to accept that the BL drama is a bit “idol” actor-oriented.

Net Siraphop Manithikhun had attracted quite a lot of attention especially in the series Khemjira. Here, there is the same theme again, the subject of destiny bonds. There is a reincarnation theme in this series too. However, what caught my attention was that the faces of the actors were less made-up and less filters were used. In Khemjira, it was almost impossible to recognize Net Siraphop Manithikhun because there were too many filters on his face; these filtered faces are the thing I dislike the most. In this series, I can say that the skins of the actors look a bit more natural; I guess this is the only point I paid attention to.

At the beginning, I said there is actually a subtext, a social questioning; now I will touch upon that openly. That is the marginalization of two gay characters by their families and the heteronormative expectations of society. The series narrates these two themes really beautifully. Topics such as liberation, the person being accepted as they are, and the shattering of pressures called social norms are truly the topics that attract my attention. Other than that, “idol” actors are not really my concern, frankly speaking.

The other thing catching my attention was Klao’s saying that in the future, gay people will live in peace in Thailand and that the state and the laws will now be peaceful. Living 400 years ago is truly not very surprising in this respect. However, today, I can say that many countries of the world are worse than this place 400 years ago; anyway, this topic is not our topic.

Time Travel Fantasy

Now, I had said, right, there is a time travel in the series, and we don’t know how this time travel is made. It is completely a fantasy—not fantastic, but a fantasy—this distinction needs to be made; it is done in some way. Actually, one shouldn’t obsess over this theme too much. In addition, since it is a novel adaptation, we don’t know the novel; since we haven’t read the novel, we won’t be able to say anything again. Klao will both determine his own fate, complete his mission in the past, save his love, and clarify his father’s grievance…

Well, will he return back to the future, and where is the original “Klao” of the past? We will get the responses to the questions slowly as we watch, since the series is 12 episodes anyway. The episodes approaching or passing 1 hour are truly very long. Sometimes you feel as if there is no plot flow; let me put it this way: even if you fast-forward the series by 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, or skip an episode, you don’t lose the whole emotion of the event, it is a bit boring in this aspect.

Is the Series Worth Watching?

The response to the question of whether the series is worth watching is yes, it is worth watching. If a fantastic or fantasy-themed time travel pleases you, and if you also love the historical theme and the BL romance sprinkled with comedy and mystery, just watch the series and let it go.

Another noteworthy point is that Nakhun acquires not only a name but also a new consciousness, a new personality, and identity. In the flow of time, he has returned once again to his selfhood in those past lives. We could make a beautiful philosophy out of this, but never mind.

Before I forget to mention, this is a novel adaptation; I had already stated this at the beginning. Sometimes it might not be very correct to say something about the series without reading the novel; the time travel theme in the novel might be perfectly in place, but when you visualize this, when you adapt it to a series, it can sometimes remain very weak.

You can look at MyDramaList for details and technical information as well; I made the most rational and non-idol-oriented commentary. As I said, there are dozens of BLs in a similar theme, and this is just one of them. In this respect, the series does not bring much innovation, frankly speaking; you can watch it only if you love these themes.

Curator's Note

Review Comment: Although the time travel theme is very ordinary and cliché, it is an active series. The comedy theme and the chemistry of the characters are in place. The drama offers a very good perspective on homosexuality, especially in terms of social viewpoint. It is possible to establish a connection between human behaviors today and the political, family, and social factors underlying two men falling in love 400 years ago. A comparison can also be made especially with modern Thailand, which has become a country of freedom for gay people. It is necessary not to watch the drama merely as "idol" actors and a passionate love. One shouldn't exaggerate the rating too much. Plenty of BL productions have been made regarding time travel fantasy, reincarnation, and the red string of fate themes. I gave my score accordingly.
