Beyond Clichés: A Journey into Identity and Young Love
While Thailand remains the heart of Boys’ Love dramas, South Korean and Japanese BL series offer high-quality storytelling that captivates global audiences. From the legendary engineering campuses of Thailand to the quiet school corridors of Japan, I am taking you on a journey through the most impactful student-life universes. Don’t forget to share your favorite picks in the comments!
🍭 Please note that this list is organized chronologically, moving from the genre’s foundational classics to the most recent hits. This structure allows you to witness the evolution of storytelling and character development over the years.
Sotus – พี่ว้ากตัวร้ายกับนยายปีหนึ่ง (2016) – Thailand BL
A story of love and identity developing on a university campus, from enmity to love.
Sotus is in the first place among university-themed BL series. The Thai-made series is now among the cult productions and is one of the first examples and source of inspiration for this theme. Despite the time that has passed, today it definitely gives that dynamism and actor-character chemistry perfectly.
SOTUS is the milestone and source of inspiration for Thailand BL series, I can say. Sotus, where engineering students pass through a disciplined system, is a system where upper classes push the new ones and train them to be disciplined mechanical engineers. However, while it is not possible for a love to be born in this harsh system, the impossible happens.
I can briefly describe the subject as follows: Kongpob falls for the senior Arthit and starts a struggle to win both the engineering education and Arthit. It is the first and best example of the theme of fighting for love and running after a partner; the ones that follow will seem like a copy of this series. The series also includes themes such as character development, the slow progress of love, the disciplined world of engineering students, and preparation for life. A warm and sincere BL series awaits you.

Addicted 上瘾 (2016) – China BL Series
The Chinese-made BL series Addicted (2016) is also among the cult youth dramas with a high school and school theme. If you are just starting out with the Boys’ Love genre, do not miss this series. It is also one of the first examples with a school and high school theme. The BL, which is in themes such as family bonds, gaining acceptance, and getting to know each other and one’s sexual orientation, offers a high-quality youth romance from enemies to lovers, you can be sure of that.
If you wish, you can also watch the Taiwanese production The On1y One (2024), which has a stepbrother theme. Even though the plot flow and content are not the same, you can watch the family and stepbrother themes in this drama too. My Bromance (2014), which is also one of the first examples of this theme, is another production you must watch.
Briefly the plot: Bai Luo Yin and Gu Hai become stepbrothers after their mothers and fathers marry. Although they do not like each other initially, the tension between them begins to leave its place to attraction over time. Gu Hai falling into his class at the high school he went to in order to find his stepbrother, and feeling an attraction at first without recognizing him, will take the duo on a journey going from enemies to lovers. While the duo struggles with complicated emotions under family problems and social pressure, their love is surrounded by secrecy and restrictions.
The Addicted (2016) boys’ love series focuses on the process of two youths discovering and accepting each other, while the 2024 production Thailand adaptation Addicted Heroin focuses more on social obstacles. I can say the original production is an important turning point for Chinese BL series.
Bai Luo Yin, who is separated from his mother and has been living with his father for a long time and is not in a very good economic condition, is an extremely successful student. His relationship with his mother is not good. His mother married again. Her marrying a wealthy general opened the distance between her and Bai Luo Yin even more.
On the other hand, the general also has a male child named Gu Hai. It will be difficult for them to cope with two male children who have no biological connection whatsoever. Already now, Gu Hai does not want a stepbrother at home. Bai Luo Yin is also definitely not in favor of moving to his mother’s new house.
Gu Hai gets his registration transferred to the state school where his stepbrother studies, without using his wealth or influence. He falls into his class without knowing who his stepbrother is. The duo is unaware of each other. The tension and fight between them develop within a complete “enemies to lovers” relationship. Even though they do not like each other at all, they suddenly learn that their parents are married.
This reality makes them a bit more aggressive. However, the tension between them does not destroy the emotions, sexual identities, and interest of the duo toward each other. While trying to accept their family problems and the marriage of their parents on one hand, they struggle with complicated and volatile emotions on the other hand. More Details: MyDramaList
Make it Right – รักออกเดิน (2016) – Thailand BL
This Thailand-made BL series with a school and high school topic will offer a very good watch not just on youth love but also on growing up, new experiences, and friendship. You must take it onto your watch list. Do not look at its being old, you look at its being permanent and being a cult.
Fuse, who fights with his girlfriend and whose relationship with her is now broken forever, does something he doesn’t want to do in a quite drunk state at the evening party he goes to: he becomes together with the youth named Tee. This union is the first step on the path of discovering his sexual identity for Fuse. As time progresses, the relationship between Tee and Fuse deepens. Their schoolmates will learn about the relationship between the duo. The lovers, whose days pass quite enjoyably in the high school environment, deal quite a lot with third persons and rivals.
On the other hand, Frame is a gay male youth studying at the same school. He gets subjected to psychological violence by his family, especially by his mother. His mother insistently wants Frame to get a girlfriend. Frame, on the other hand, just wants to live his emotions and be free.
The series is among the most cult examples of familiar high school and youth themes, as I said at the beginning. What youths need to do to be happy and hold onto life is just to do what is right, what comes from within them. The traumatic effect of social and family pressures on the person forms the dramatic theme of the series; you must read this subtext too. Today’s productions consist of BL series that do not have a subtext and are just romance-oriented. This cult production offers a drama sprinkled for love and a personal, sensory development. However, the characters can sometimes feel too hyperactive and unserious.
The series, which is fluent and abundant in comedy elements, also harbors those spoiled, screaming, artificial characterizations found in familiar Thailand BL series. The school theme I dislike the most is these spoiled and screaming types. It is very disturbing as a way of expressing the youth fire.
To express it a bit more sincerely, it is a production that gives importance to appearance, featuring handsome boys, and also having a cliché side. Still, if you want to make a boys’ love archive, it will be an enjoyable classic watch for you. With pastel, lively colors and a bright youth environment, the atmosphere of the series is quite entertaining. More Details: MyDramaList
Fish Upon the Sky ปลาบนฟ้า (2021) Thailand BL
Fish Upon the Sky is another one of the best BL series about school and university. It is a full series that tells about love, friendship and family bonds with both its energy and character chemistry. It is both an entertaining, emotional and educational drama.
Very brief subject of Fish Upon the Sky: Pi is a dentistry student and in love with Mueang, but his relationship with Mueang is not welcomed by his surroundings. Mork shows interest in Pi and forms an emotional bond with someone he met on Facebook. Meanwhile, a love story will develop between Pi’s older brother Duean and Mork’s brother Meen.
Fish Upon the Sky also deals with the relationships of two brothers with gay identities with their families and society. In this respect, it will not offer you an empty fan view. The series balances humor and romance in a balanced way. It will offer you a romantic comedy and youth theme that you will love in terms of touching upon social and personal problems. You should include it in your watch list.

TharnType The Series – เกลียดนักมาเป็นที่รักกันซะดีๆ (2019) Thailand BL Series
TharnType The Series is one of the cult, school and university themed youth series that tells about the transformation of hatred and exclusion into love. It is one of the best and most loved series of this genre and a timeless series. Don’t let its age mislead you. If you like the fake relationship theme, this romantic comedy full of music is for you.
TharnType The Series is a Thailand BL series about the transformation of homophobic Type’s hatred for his openly gay roommate Tharn into love. Their hatred and fake relationships will turn into love over time. Type will learn to break his prejudices and accept himself. In this respect, as a viewer, you will watch not only a university romance and homosexuality theme but also a story of acceptance and development. The second season of the series, TharnType 2: 7 Years of Love, is about the 7 years later of Tharn and Type’s relationship.
TharnType is among the cult productions of Thailand BL series. While the series deals with themes such as homophobia, past traumas and acceptance, it also tells a story of love and emotional healing through Tharn and Type’s relationship. For this reason, there is a multi-layered story. The series will attract BL enthusiasts with its strong acting performances and character chemistry. You can also watch the relationship between Fiat and Leo, which is discussed in another sub-story in the series, in the Don’t Say No series.
👉✅ Details, cast, and characters
Don’t Say No เมื่อหัวใจใกล้กัน (2021) Thailand BL
It focuses on the relationships of Leo and Fiat, whom you know from TharnType The Series.
A tiny summary for Don’t Say No: Fiat and Leo officially became a couple after their relationship in the TharnType series. Fiat and Leo’s new relationship will become a scandal due to secretly taken photos and videos. At this point, the relationship of the two will get into trouble with family pressure and the opposition of Leo’s authoritarian father. While the Leo and Leon brothers fight with their gay relationships and their families’ expectations, they will have to face their father’s understanding of masculinity and family honor.
Don’t Say No is about the relationship of Leo and Fiat extending from the past to the present. It deals with themes of love, jealousy and friendship. But the real important theme is families’ acceptance of gay orientations and the change of characters. The relationship between Leo and Fiat is built on an intense emotional tension between Leo’s determination and Fiat’s insecurity. Again, it has a good narrative on social pressures. In short, it is not a simple series where people run after each other and takes place in a world of pink dreams; it will offer you a romantic school and university subject within a quite harsh reality. You should watch it.

2gether – เพราะเราคู่กัน (2020) Thailand BL About University
One of the world-famous BL series among university-themed romantic comedies. A cult boys’ love that is sincere and full of music, telling about a fake love gradually turning into real love.
Tine asks Sarawat to be a fake lover to get rid of Green, who likes him. Thus, the fake lover game begins. Tine and Sarawat’s love game is tested many times with Sarawat’s real feelings and misunderstandings. Rumors that Sarawat has a girlfriend start to strain the relationship. Now the duo, stuck between real feelings and the fake ones, must make a decision.
Although 2gether follows the cliché Thailand BL series formula, it will connect you to itself with the chemistry between characters and entertaining dialogues. You will also enjoy watching the opposite characters of Tine and Sarawat turn into a deepening relationship over time. Sarawat’s patience and Tine’s innocence will leave the place of the initial “fake” game to a real bond. Perhaps you will find the BL romance and idealized love in your dreams in this series.

Gen Y – วัยรุ่นวุ่นYรัก (2020) Thailand BL
Gen Y (2020) is one of the classic (cult) youth BL series with a Thailand production, university/high school topic. Before moving on to the details, the series is a romantic comedy telling about the effort given by medical faculty student Kit to win the heart of engineering student Mark. In the sub-stories, you will watch the relationship of the other couples (Wayu & Thanu, Pok and Tong). Of course, it is not just a simple love story; there are also themes that will penetrate into you, such as heartbreaks, acceptance, and knowing oneself, and for this reason, I find the title of “cult” correct for this production.
There is a character diversity and a multi-layered structure in the series, and you will love this. Not only the school life of the characters but also their psychological developments, emotional expectations, and perhaps their stories of growing up will affect you. Let’s move on to the details of the boys’ love production, which ranks first for those just starting out with the BL genre; topic, summary, review, and more.
It will be a general summary that is not long. What is important is the review and commentary of the series. The style of commentary will not be fan-oriented. It will be a realistic summary and evaluation without caring about “how sweet” the characters or actors are or “how beautifully they smile.”
Gen Y makes a sudden entry with a mysterious separation scene in the first episode. Wayu, the loved student of the medical faculty, is shaken by a sudden and unexplained separation from his mysterious lover Pharawee. The first person to run to the heartbroken Wayu becomes his friend Mark. However, over time, Wayu begins to experience a romantic drawing closer with Thanu, who was sent to look after him in place of Pharawee. The first beginning will feel a bit complicated and layered, but this is a good thing.
Two main couples take place at the center of the series: Wayu & Thanu and Mark & Kit. Kit is a third-year student at the medical faculty. Mark, on the other hand, is from the engineering faculty. Mark struggles quite a lot to win Kit’s heart, and eventually, the duo becomes a couple.
Another interesting story remaining in the second plan is the relationship of Pok and Tong, who have just started university. Tensions experienced in high school and resentments coming from the past shape this duo. The effect of the bad character Sandee and the mysterious Pharawee, who appears in the second season, will leave a mark on this story.
The return of Pharawee will form a new breaking point in the Wayu and Thanu relationship. Thus, the characters will experience a deeper internal turmoil. In addition, Thanu’s tense relationship with Padbok adds a different dimension to the series. Passing among a quite crowded relationship chart and friend group, the BL series will offer a more enjoyable watch in this respect. The topic is simple and cliché, but the sub-characters will give you that romantic comedy you want in abundance. More Details: MyDramaList

Takara-kun to Amagi-kun 高良くんと天城くん (2022) – Japan BL series
A tiny subject of the Japanese-made high school love themed series: Popular student Takara has a secret relationship with quiet Amagi. While Amagi is uncomfortable with the restrictiveness of this relationship outside of school, Takara will confess his feelings.
Takara and Amagi meet through a school project and discover their different worlds. Over time, the distance between them decreases, their bonds strengthen and the series will continue with their conflicts and accepting each other as friends and potential lovers. This tension and curiosity will connect you to the series.
Takara-kun to Amagi-kun (2022) also deals with a gay student’s struggle with social pressures and his secret love, it’s not just a high school love. The series tells very well how Takara’s introverted nature and Amagi’s extroverted attitude shape their relationship and the emotional development of the character. For this reason, it is one of the BL series you should watch.

10 Perfect Liners – สายรหัสเทวดา – (2024-2025) Thailand BL Series About School, University and Youth
Perfect 10 Liners (2024–2025) is a university and youth-themed Thailand BL series. Its treating school life, love, and friendship topics might feel a bit cliché; you might have watched its similarities before too. However, the chemistry and acting performance of the “ForceBook” duo, who are among the BL screen faces, make the series more watchable.
The relationships among the members of the popular Perfect 10 Liners group, which also gives its name to the series, are focused upon. Even if the topic feels a bit familiar, the series is worth watching. Its multi-layered structure, the abundance of characters, and their relationships with one another will also attract your interest. If you love university and youth themes, and if the “ForceBook” duo is your favorite, the BL series is just for you. Now let’s move on to the details; there are plenty of criticisms.
In terms of cinematography, location design, and production aesthetics, Perfect 10 Liners definitely maintains the accustomed Thailand BL standard. We are faced with luxurious environments, heavily filtered shootings, excessively meticulously designed campuses, and “perfect” characters. Most of the actors consist of faces the viewer has seen in other productions before and built a bond with. This situation brings along a feeling of repetition that blunts creativity on one hand, while creating a sense of familiarity on the other hand.
At the center of the series take place the members of a university group named “Perfect 10 Liners.” This group consists of charismatic and popular individuals mentoring the other students on campus. When Wine, one of the main characters, gets included in this elite group, his relationships built with other members—especially with Faifa—ignite the fuse of events.
The first story starts with the tension turning into love, which begins between Arm and Arc over a photograph on social media. The bittersweet rivalry progresses with the classic “opposite poles attract” fiction. Subsequently, the emotional story of Yotha and Gun, and the intimacy developing between Wine and Faifa are added to the narrative too.
However, all these stories remain as superficial relationships interwoven with clichés, mostly driven by the concern of “fan service” rather than emotional intensity. Even though the series is spread across 24 episodes, it spends the large part of this length with dialogues falling into repetition and plenty of unnecessary extensions. In short, it might be difficult for you to follow such a long series.
I will make a realistic commentary, not evaluating the series based on the actors or couples being “sweet” or the beauty in their “smiles.” Do not be deceived by the MDL fan comments.
Perfect 10 Liners, even if it doesn’t offer a new story, is an easily watchable, colorful, and light series for the viewer who is familiar with the BL genre and enjoys watching the interactions of characters. Within this network where each character connects to another, there are no very big surprises or dramatic breaking points. But it has a sincere story. There is action and energy.
Therefore, if your expectation is not high, the series can provide you with your “daily BL dose.” Other than that, you can turn toward other series. But one must not forget that the BL universe taking place in university is almost identical to one another. More Details: MyDramaList
Love Mechanics – กลรักรุ่นพี่ (2022)
Topic and summary: Engineering student Mark harbors an unrequited love toward the popular student of the school and experiences a heartbreak when rejected. Vee is the charismatic student of the school and begins to feel an interest toward Mark. The duo, who start living in the same dormitory, have their relationship take on a complicated form when they kiss and draw close on a drunk night. Love Mechanics is a successful school and university-themed Thailand BL series treating youth, love, and finding oneself themes in an impressive way.
At the center of the series takes place Mark, who has just started the engineering faculty. The young and emotional Mark harbors a hopeless platonic love toward the most popular student of the school. However, when he confesses his love, he confronts a bitter reality: his feelings are unrequited. Mark, experiencing a disappointment, is on one hand trying to repair his heartbreak, while being on the other hand about to meet new emotions.
Meeting Vee: Attraction and Contrast
Meanwhile, Vee appears before him. Vee is one of the remarkable, charismatic, and self-confident students of the school. What makes him more complicated is his slowly developing interest toward Mark, despite having a girlfriend (Poly). The duo, who start living in the same dormitory, seem completely opposite to each other at first, but the tension between them leaves its place to a complicated attraction over time. A kiss experienced while drunk one night and the subsequent physical drawing closer put the relationship between them onto an irreversible path.
Fluctuations and Emotional Tension: Love and Chaos
While Mark and Vee try to confront these new emotions on one hand, they struggle with the oppositions, stubbornnesses, and misunderstandings between them on the other hand. Vee being squeezed between his increasing interest toward Mark and his past with Poly puts the relationship of the duo into a constant volatility. Poly beginning to cheat on Vee adds another new complexity into the network of relationships too. From this point on, the questions of the series also begin to increase:
Will Vee be able to leave his past and build a new life with Mark? Will Mark be able to make peace with his own identity and emotions?
Love Mechanics Thailand BL Series handles that fragile period of youth years and the process of the individual knowing themselves. I can say the internal conflicts brought by love, loneliness, rejection, and building a bond anew are the main themes of the series. It reflects the inner worlds and complexities of the characters very well.
Even though familiar BL clichés—luxurious locations, dramatic confrontations, excessively idealized characters—show themselves in this production too, Love Mechanics is a university campus-themed BL that I love. The drama at the same time narrates the individual’s confrontation with themselves, accepting their emotions, and that loving is something that requires courage. In addition, you can also watch the 2023 production spin-off Future, telling the relationship of supporting characters Ana and Fuse taking place in the same universe. More Details: MyDramaList

Theo returns to Thailand from France and starts studying literature at his father’s university. After his grandmother’s death, he reunites with his childhood friend Akk and enters a search to meet the mysterious “Enchanté.”

You’re My Sky – จุดหมายคือท้องฟ้า – (2022)
The 2022 production Thailand BL series You’re My Sky is a 12-episode youth drama adapted from the novel of the same name. The series does not present merely a romantic love story; at the same time, it offers a multi-layered narrative built upon friendship, commitment, dreams, sports, and personal courage.
Events developing on the ground of the post-high school period, university, and the sports sciences faculty touch upon the place of gay relationships within society with subtle touches too. Three different couples, three different loves, and a single struggle: The courage to be yourself must be the micro-summary of the series. The drama is among the best productions in student and youth themes, taking place on the university campus of the boys’ love genre. It has a story worth watching.
Tupfah and Torn: From Childhood Friendship to University Love
At the center of the series takes place the relationship of Torn with Tupfah, who is a basketball enthusiast and whom he has known since childhood years. Years ago, Tupfah introduced basketball to Torn; their friendship had consolidated with the excitement given by playing and sharing together. Now, they are in the same faculty at university, and their relationship has begun to evolve into another dimension.
However, a serious test stands before them: a professional basketball career. Should Tupfah progress individually and target a nationwide success, or should he prefer to remain together both with Torn and his team? This decision will test not only his love but his values too.
Aii and Sean: The Fragility of First Love
One of the track and field department students, Aii, is on the verge of being honest with himself for the first time and living his first love. His relationship starting with Sean brings him both happiness and fears. Because a turning point stands before Aii: his scholarship in Japan. This scholarship is a great opportunity in terms of career; but love is not something to be left easily once tasted.
Will Aii listen to the voice in his heart or will he leave his love behind for his future? The series directs a very familiar question to the viewer through this dilemma: “Can you dream without being yourself?”
Dome and Vee: Hidden Emotions, Revealed Truths
Dome is seemingly lovers with Vee’s sister. However, the true orientation inside him pulls the main owner of his heart in another direction: toward Vee. This complicated triangle causes Dome to enter an internal reckoning.
Even though hiding the truths is easy, being honest with oneself is always more valuable. What Dome needs to do is to be brave and turn toward the relationship that truly makes him happy. However, this will of course bring along broken hearts and difficult explanations too.
While three different couples pass through three separate tests, they give a common message to the viewer: Love depends on the heart, not on orientation. But of course, the real world is not this smooth. Healthy relationships against homophobia and a circle approaching with tolerance, which we see in the series, are mostly a utopia. However, these series give hope by imagining what ought to be. I hope I didn’t make a too pessimistic commentary. More Details: MyDramaList

Something’s Not Right – 무언가 잘못되었다 – (2025) – South Korea BL Series
8-episode South Korea-made university, school, youth series.
Something’s Not Right (2025) is a South Korean-made BL series. Do Ba U and Ji Hun are two youths who have been close friends since their childhood and continued their friendship until university. However, this friendship transforms into a hidden romantic tension over time. Do Ba U fell in love with his best friend but could never say this openly. His words of “I love you” were always uttered with a mask of a joke. The series is a spin-off taking place in the world of Blueming(2022). It is an average university and campus-themed BL youth series.
Something’s Not Right (2025) Plot and Summary
The webtoon-adapted BL-themed South Korean series offers an emotional and romantic gay love story progressing through youth and school themes. In South Korean series, the acting performance is always one step ahead compared to other Asian series in terms of both tone of voice and body language. This series continues this tradition as well.
Even though the acting performance in the series is of the kind that can be encountered in average BL productions, the inner worlds of the characters are reflected well. Still, excessive makeup use appears before us here too. Shining, remarkable actors do not have difficulty in attracting the attention of the viewer. The ambiguous love topic largely meets the need for sexual tension.
While the viewer follows the romantic tension between the main characters with curiosity, the emotional fluctuations and psychological processes lived by the characters offer a high-quality viewing experience. While narrating both youth love and the internal turmoil of unrequited emotions, the series invites the viewer to an emotional journey.
Review and Commentary
Between Do Ba U and Ji Hun, who have been very close friends since their childhood, there has been an ambiguous romantic bond since high school. Do Ba U is in love with his best friend but has difficulty in expressing this emotion openly. Every “I love you” attempt gets pulled back by wrapping it in a joke. In reality, this sentence is his greatest truth.
High school years are left behind; they have now become university students. Do Ba U is one of the most popular youths of the school. One day, he suddenly tells Ji Hun that he now wants to end their friendship. Ji Hun does not take this outburst seriously, thinking it is a joke as usual.
Do Ba U tells Ji Hun that he loves him and makes a dating proposal. But right after, he adds that this is a joke. Actually, his heart is serious but he fears not receiving a response. He believes that Ji Hun does not love him, and this thought prevents the expression of the love he raised inside him for years.
The duo tries to act as if they are lovers for a week. This process becomes an opportunity to confront true emotions. Because Ji Hun has also been in love with Do Ba U for years. However, he carries the same fears too. This emotional dilemma keeps the duo on the boundary of sincerity.
Meanwhile, a new character enters the stage: Jung Ha Min. In a search for a story for the love-themed webtoon competition organized at school, Ha Min finds Do Ba U’s diary. Love is historicized with its unrequitedness, and this is a great opportunity for Ha Min. The series offers a quite cliché love story. The viewer had already watched the best examples of this theme before. The series, which does not go beyond the theme of making oneself loved by force or making the popular student who does not give him the time of day fall in love with himself, will give you plenty of comedy.
