Love for Love’s Sake (2024) – A Journey of Love and Friendship of Opposite Characters in Virtual Reality

연애 지상주의 구역 - An emotional journey extending from virtual reality to the reality of the heart.

This 2024 South Korean-made BL series is an eight-episode series. K-BL is usually more minimalist, but this boys’ love is a bit more detailed. It is adapted from the webtoon named “Love Supremacy Zone” (연애 지상주의 구역). The writers are Aquram and Hwacha (화차), and the illustrator is Kkokku. Most probably, the global readers who know this webtoon have also watched the series.

Virtual reality and computer game plots do not usually happen much in the BL genre. A high school, school series also focuses a bit on the perception of reality. Perhaps it will feel different for the audience who are used to Thailand’s flat, idealized stories. I liked the narration style of the series, the theme of gaming, and “leveling up.” I haven’t read the webtoon, but I can say that there is a very diverse and rich BL culture in the webtoon world. The series is officially available on the iQIYI platform. You might want to check MyDramaList for more technical details. In my opinion, it is one of the best youth, high school, and school-themed dramas among South Korean BL series.

Love for Love’s Sake (2024) Plot, Setting, and Summary

True Love in a Virtual World:

29-year-old Tae Myung Ha experiences a great excitement when he learns that a novel he loves will be adapted into a computer game. For Tae Myung Ha, who also has a very close relationship with the author of the novel, things take an unexpected turn: One morning, when he opens his eyes, he finds himself at the age of 19, in his high school years. However, this is not the real world; it is a simulation universe that exactly overlaps with the setting of the game.

In this game-like world, Tae Myung Ha is given special missions. The first and most critical mission: to make his schoolmate Cha Yeo Woon happy and to help him “achieve his goal.” This mission, which felt meaningless and ridiculous at first, leads to an emotional change in Myung Ha over time. While the relationship between them gradually turns into a romance, the sense of reality also slowly blurs.

However, of course, nothing will be easy. With the involvement of classmate Chun Sang Won, a “third person” effect enters the story. Is Sang Won’s presence in the game just a character, or is it a system error that will turn everything upside down? Meanwhile, the reality of the game also starts to glitch slowly, and errors appear in the system. Rules change, time bends, and identities are questioned.

Tae Myung Ha now has to question not only a love but also which reality he is living in. Stepping in here, I can say that I liked this theme very much. We cannot find such questionings in most of the shallow BL dramas.

Review and Commentary

Love for Love’s Sake treats the high school love theme that has begun to become cliché in the BL world; it might look ordinary up to this point. With its virtual reality, game universe, and mission-themed narration, the romantic story now progresses in a different dimension of reality. It is a production above average in terms of the love story taking place inside the game, character development, and emotional intensity.

Even though a virtual universe or a game simulation consists of codes and an unreal setting from the outside, the situation inside is very different. There is a real world and real feelings inside.

The relationship between Myung Ha and Yeo Woon will evolve into a complex situation of opposite characters. Myung Ha’s emotional and sincere nature reflects the attraction of opposite poles very well with Yeo Woon’s cold-blooded and distant manner. Yeo Woon opening his heart over time will show that the conflict between the duo is now over and they are ready for romance. But will everything remain in this virtual reality? Is that world real?

Is the Series Worth Watching?

The acting performances and the setting are, in my opinion, of a quality that will meet expectations. If you do not expect too much emotional confusion, dramatic explosions, and heavy love scenes; and if you want a slightly fantastic and a bit surreal story, watch the series. The series can be considered a snack-like watch, but it is not a “watch and forget completely” type either; it can hold an important place in your BL library.

Final Comment: The series questions love through a different dimension: it brought to my mind the thought that even in a virtual playground, the reality and sincerity of feelings are important and real, “even if it is a lie.” Actually, feelings, friendship, romance—everything is real, but the universe where the feelings are experienced is a virtual reality. Who knows, maybe the universe we live in is also such a place.
