Dark Blue Kiss is a 2019 production and one of the cult Thai series. It is on the themes of youth love and courage. But the most distinct theme of the series is not this. In my opinion, the most important theme in the series is that love is not about gender, but about what a person feels. Courage and understanding tear down family issues and all disagreements. The drama is one of the early BL series with themes of friendship, family pressure, and youth. For this reason, it is a cult production. If you follow BL series and are going to watch older ones as well, you should definitely watch this series.

Dark Blue Kiss (2019) Synopsis
The story revolves around the secret relationship of Pete and Kao, who study at the same school and in the same department. The couple, studying electrical engineering, hides their love from their surroundings. (This is a theme not generally seen in BL series. Boys’ love productions usually tell the stories of openly gay individuals.) Pete only reveals this relationship to his father and receives full support from him. However, Kao finds it difficult to come out to his mother. Making a living by giving private tutoring, Kao tutors Non, the son of the principal of the school where his mother works. Pete does not like this situation and experiences fits of jealousy.
The character Non is a high school senior who is pressured by his family and grew up unloved. He initiates a conscious rivalry against Pete and tries to drive a wedge between the lovers. On the other hand, the series does not only focus on the Pete and Kao relationship. Another important pillar of the story is the story of Sun, a cafe owner, and Mork, who constantly bickers with him but gradually gets closer. The events shaping around this couple form the second main relational dynamic of the series. You will also see that side stories supported by characters like Manow and Rain keep the tempo of the series in balance.
Kao starts to spend more time with his tutoring student Non. Non’s admiration for Kao turns into a romantic interest over time. When Pete notices this situation, his feelings of jealousy and insecurity intensely emerge. This puts Pete and Kao’s relationship through a serious test.
On the other side, the relationship between Sun and Mork, whose relationship was tense in the past, slowly begins to transform. Sun’s calm and mature attitude begins to balance Mork’s harsh and angry side. Especially Mork’s past problems and loneliness soften with Sun’s support.

Pete’s jealousy and Kao’s inability to set clear enough boundaries between himself and Non lead to big cracks in the relationship. Misunderstandings create an emotional rupture. Similarly, Mork’s past brings about situations that test Sun’s patience. For both couples, this period is the most critical part where they need to grow.
Kao will face the need to be honest with both his family and himself. He realizes that hiding his relationship with Pete hurts him more. Sun and Mork also overcome their own traumas and establish a more balanced communication. Both couples strengthen their bonds by openly discussing their problems. The series will end with a happy ending as both couples accept their love. However, the relationship chaos might tire you a bit.
Series Review and Plot
Since Dark Blue Kiss is one of the cult productions, there are fewer clichés. This is pleasing. From 2019 to the present, the BL industry has started producing series that are copies of each other. That is why the firsts have a special place. I liked that there are more down-to-earth and sincere relationships instead of extreme wealth, luxurious lives, or overly dramatic events, and I am sure you will like it too. Comedy elements, especially in Sun and Mork’s scenes, will make you laugh.
One of the most important messages of the series must be the attitudes families take towards their children’s sexual orientations. Pete’s father does not mind his son being gay; what is important to him is love itself, gender has no importance. Kao’s mother, on the other hand, actually knows her son’s orientation but prefers to stay silent. This dual attitude explains the internal conflicts and communication gaps LGBT+ individuals experience with their families very well. You cannot find this theme in most BL series. Because BL series offer a sterile environment to their viewers. BL series are a world of pink dreams.

The character Non, on the other hand, will appear before you as the representation of gay individuals who are suppressed and unapproved by their families. Even though he has his own lover, he will try to close his emotional gaps through Kao. In this respect, the series explains the effects of family pressure on the individual very well. The series also has a good subtext in the name of learning to approach with love instead of rejecting, and being compassionate instead of hating.
As a result, Dark Blue Kiss is a production you must watch, both with its sincere relationships and the social messages it gives. You cannot easily find themes of youth, love, identity, and acceptance in the BL world.
Is the Drama Worth Watching?
Yes, definitely watch it. You will have stepped outside the familiar boys’ love molds. It can be one of the first Thai BL series you will start. You will gladly watch the fine details on behalf of sexual identities, personal freedoms, self-discovery, family, and society. Also, do not miss the themes of “the revelation of hidden feelings”, “the testing of trust”, and “love maturing with truth” in both couples’ relationships.
