ABO Desire (2025), outside the familiar boys’ love tropes, handles a gay love born amidst the power struggle between Alphas, Betas, and Omegas, which are new species mutated by a virus epidemic. The Chinese-made BL is one of the rare productions that managed to overcome censorship in China. We cannot see too many Chinese BL series, and this series is of watchable quality. A bit of a sci-fi and fantasy mix.
Romance continues with a quite harsh and class-based distinction in the series. The drama of a sick man hiding his identity in despair also raises the tension in the series. The Alphas, Betas, and Omegas in the novel-adaptation BL series felt very familiar to me. For some reason, it reminded me of the social status division in Brave New World. Of course, this is just an association; there is no connection between the BL series and the sci-fi classic masterpiece I mentioned.

ABO Desire BL Series Plot and Summary
An omegaverse universe pushing the boundaries of desires and obedience. Set in a world where forbidden desires prevail, and power and weakness depend on chemical balances, ABO Desire brings a dark, dramatic, and equally touching interpretation to the omegaverse theme. Is it love, instinct, or just a genetic destiny? This series questions whether love can liberate or not.
A major epidemic breaks out in the world. There is a pandemic that cannot be prevented by any means. While it continues to advance, people also continue to die. Those infected with the virus either die or survive according to their blood type. The majority of the human population has died. But this is not an end.
As a result of the epidemic, the virus mutates by copying itself into human DNA. Genetically mutated humans develop a new organ. The Alpha species secretes a quite powerful hormone. Betas are subordinates of Alphas. Practically under their command. Omegas are the lowest level. Only Betas can be together with them. Meanwhile, gender no longer matters; Betas and Omegas can have children. Emotions are no longer important. Everything in this dark world is in the power of chemicals.

Right at this time, a new type of cancer has emerged in the world. This organ, which radiates newly developing powerful hormones and practically gives humans a new power, is an indicator of an Alpha’s sex and attractiveness. Meanwhile, Gao Tu is an Omega. He uses medication to suppress his 3rd-class existence. While pretending to be a Beta this way, he falls in love with Hua Yong, the new secretary arriving at the company. Hua Yong is an Enigma, the only one of his kind pretending to be a Beta. As an Enigma, he is the highest of the species.
Hua Yong (despite actually being a very powerful Enigma) is someone running quite secretive operations and pursuing new genetic technologies. Playing innocent, he is together with Sheng Shao You, the owner of a rival biological research company. Sheng Shao You has fallen in love with this elegant and fragile man. On the other hand, Gao Tu is face-to-face with death under the influence of the drugs he takes.
Sheng Shao You plans to buy the Shen Wen Lang pharmaceutical company and seize the new technology to treat his father. While a complex love affair continues between technology and power struggles, will the winner really be love?

Film Review and Commentary
The drama takes place among a new species of humans after being infected with a mutated virus in the near future. As a matter of fact, the series also handles the virus and epidemic theme in a way. The BL series also explains well the virus epidemic and the theme of survival afterward.
While the BL love theme progresses quite slowly and cautiously in the series, it will be hard to understand the real intentions of the characters for a long time. In the series where the technology theme is very artificial, the actors being very bright and excessively made up also adds a “zombie” vibe to the series.
In the series, the concept of gender is different for the new species of human. Apart from Alphas, Betas and Omegas are no different from sex slaves. Within this hierarchy, Gao Tu hiding himself, pretending to be a Beta, falling in love with the most unlikely person, and his past adds a good dramatic air to the series. Without forgetting, the current “gender and sexual orientation” debates and the new gender and sexual orientation concept after the virus in the series also show that everything is variable.

On the other hand, gay love will be waiting for you as a BL viewer with slow-progressing intrigues instead of a passionate romance. While acting proceeds at an average level, the cinematography is as usual. The visual direction is also just like in familiar homosexual-themed dramas. The series is a production that can be watched with its uncertainty, mystery, and chaotic love theme.
Does love really exist? Is it hidden powers or emotions that bring humans into existence? Are emotions like love and commitment now prisoners of chemicals? Is losing emotions also losing humanity? If we look at today’s reality, is it worth fighting over sexual orientations? Adaptation: Adapted from Nong Jian‘s novel “Desire“. More Info: On MyDramaList, IMDb sites. Where to Watch: Viki is the official broadcaster. That’s all from me. The 2025 production 垂涎 (ABO Desire) is worth watching.
