My Personal Weatherman (2023) – A Love Story Pouring with Passion

体感予報 - A story of discovering love and oneself between opposite characters, different lives, and expectations

My Personal Weatherman, originally titled Taikan Yoho, is a 2023 Japanese BL series. A manga adaptation. Sometimes I ask myself what the BL industry would do without mangas. Especially its handling of a relationship evolving from school life to professional life and the internal conflicts of the characters is good, I liked the series.

Even though I have watched similar series, I have always loved the simple and natural narration of the J-BL genre, far from excesses. Especially worldwide, manga adaptations are closely followed by fans. For this reason, I can say adaptations always have more viewers. Now you decide whether your country is included in that world or not. Now let’s look at the series. Don’t just dismiss it as a 2023 production and old; whatever is good is in the old ones. The BL industry is now “idol” focused. The only thing they know cannot go beyond presenting idealized shitty stories through young actors with filtered faces.

My Personal Weatherman Plot and Summary

Segasaki Mizuki is the coolest, most popular student in school. He is known as someone with a wide social circle, charismatic, and hard to reach. Tanada Yoh, who leads a completely lonely life in the same school, is a quiet, introverted person. While secretly watching and drawing Mizuki, he steps into the manga world over time. Unable to resist Mizuki’s charm, Yoh includes him in his drawings as well.

Over time, the friend group takes Yoh in too. The relationship between them maintains its complexity: close, but just as distant. After graduating from school, Segasaki offers Yoh to live together. Mizuki, who is now a weather forecaster, wants Yoh to focus only on drawing manga.

However, this domestic life is not limited to an ordinary friendship. In contrast to Mizuki’s attitudes that appear cold, distant, and harsh from the outside, Yoh has been living for years with intense emotions suppressed inside him. Mizuki has practically settled at the center of his life. Over time, storms rage in the inner world of Yoh, whose both manga career and love life are not going well.

Years later

The story begins with the ordinary life of Tanada Yoh (Mashiko Atsuki), an introverted manga artist. Yoh, who spends his days drawing in a quiet apartment, is a character who struggles to express his emotions outward. The only colorful detail in his life is the popular weather forecaster Segasaki Mizuki (Higuchi Kouhei), whom he frequently sees on television screens. Yoh has been hiding his secret admiration for Mizuki inside for years.

One day, destiny brings Yoh and Mizuki together under the same roof in an unexpected way. With the duo staying in the same house, their old complex feelings are renewed.

While Yoh tries to solve Mizuki’s complex personality, he will realize that his own feelings are deepening as well. Mizuki, on the other hand, although trying to suppress his feelings, remains defenseless against Yoh’s sincerity. The relationship between them becomes increasingly more distinct, but Mizuki’s internal conflicts and public identity will turn into the biggest obstacle to their love.

Will this complex relationship between the duo be able to turn into love? Will Mizuki show his feelings? Will Yoh reflect Mizuki onto the characters he draws? While the series pursues these questions, it offers its audience a serene but in-depth love story.

Characters

Yoh is a character starved for love, with low self-confidence, and struggling to cope with the world. Segasaki, on the other hand, although appearing harsh, distant, and dominant from the outside, is actually a protective lover type. Yoh’s disarray and state of surrender trigger Segasaki’s need for order and control. Segasaki both protects Yoh and selfishly possesses him from time to time; this creates a fine line between dependency and love in the relationship.

The energy of the duo is a refined form of the “timid + dominant” dynamic: The more Yoh lets himself go, the more Segasaki gets attached; the more Segasaki possesses, the safer Yoh feels. The emotional rhythm between them carries all the romantic tension of the series.

Is the Series Worth Watching

My Personal Weatherman is an above-average BL series especially for BL viewers who love manga adaptations, with its inner voice narration, simplicity, and realistic character handling. Watch this series without hesitation, which does not get bogged down in side stories and directly focuses on the relationship of the main characters.

The story tells the complex, intense relationship approaching dependency levels between the famous weather forecaster Segasaki, who looks flawless from the outside, and the mangaka Yoh, who has harbored a platonic love for him for years. The Manga Adaptation (鯛野ニッケ) series is on Viki and Apple TV platforms. If you want more information, you can look on the MyDramaList site.
