Unintentional Love Story (2023) – In Pursuit of an Unexpected Closenes

Unintentional Love Story (2023) is a 10-episode South Korean-made BL series. This webtoon adaptation series, with each episode lasting an average of 35 minutes, puts the spontaneity of love, fragile relationships, and second chances at its center. In this respect, in my opinion, it is a sufficient drama. It can be preferred especially instead of nonsensical Thai university and youth series where the same topics constantly appear before us.

Especially art and pottery is a familiar theme for K-BL. I can also call it a healing with art theme. You can also watch the spin-off series The Time of Fever. Now I will move on to the details.

Unintentional Love Story Plot and Summary

If Love Comes When It Wasn’t Accounted For at All

Ji Won, who is a successful office worker, gets fired from his job one day in a way he never expected. Justification: his name was allegedly involved in a corruption scandal. Yet, for Ji Won, these claims are both ridiculous and quite devastating. Not only does he get fired from his job, but a serious feeling of emptiness also forms in his life. To clear his head, he decides to go to a quiet, calm coastal town far away from the city. This decision will not only be an escape, but also the beginning of a new page for him.

On one of his first days in the town, a small incident — a broken plate — drags him to a ceramic workshop that seems ordinary but hides a completely different world inside. Here, he meets Yoon Tae. Yoon Tae is a man who is quiet, introverted, avoids contact with people, but practically tells his own story with the pottery he makes. Although their first encounter is a bit tense, Ji Won realizes over time that this man is actually a lost artist, a name who left the company years ago and whom his superiors are still looking for.

Ji Won has a new duty: to make Yoon Tae return. But things will become more complex than he estimated. Because Yoon Tae is someone who distanced himself not only from his job, but from all people. Ji Won, on the other hand, in this process does not only fulfill his duty, but slowly starts to fall in love with Yoon Tae.

A parallel story is also handled in the series: The emotional bond based on years coming from the past between the owners of the cafe where they work is also described. This side story shows that the series focuses not only on a single love story, but on the spontaneously developing nature of love from different angles.

Unintentional Love Story Review

The Heart Behind the Ceramic

Although “Unintentional Love Story” starts like a typical South Korean BL series, the artistic themes and visual aesthetics sprinkled into the story make it a bit more watchable. The color palette in the series, the use of locations, and especially the pottery scenes are quite relaxing. I love such calm and relaxing series, it is practically like a therapy. The serenity of the rural town forms a nice contrast with the internal chaos of the characters.

Although the Ji Won character seems focused only on his career at first, over time he undergoes a transformation as someone who discovers himself and succumbs to his emotions. Yoon Tae, on the other hand, is a man who wants to bury the heartbreak of the past into the clay and build a life again, but cannot find the courage to do so. The relationship of the duo shows from start to finish how a “story starting without thinking” can deepen.

Of course, it does not add anything very new to the BL world. Especially the work/love conflict and a heartbreak experienced in the past, which we frequently see in South Korean series, exist here as well. But the prominent aspect of the series is its scenes that tell more than words in the moments when characters meet eye to eye.

The relationship of the cafe owner couple, which is the side story, reflects a more mature and settled love. This saves the series from being trapped only in youth romance. The youth romance theme is in a dead end now. They keep making series that are identical to each other. Here, one should focus on the universality of love, not on the cuteness of the actors or them being young and attractive.

The relationship between Tae Jun and Won Yeong develops at a slow but intense rhythm over trust and unconfessable emotions. I can say I felt a bit of psychological tension here. The feeling of trust, self-acceptance, and confessing one’s love themes were good.

The balance between the duo is built on one fighting with his fears coming from the past while the other confronts his own mistakes. I know this theme will seem a bit like a cliché. In the end, their relationship turns into a journey born out of need and transformed into love.

Is the Series Worth Watching?

“Unintentional Love Story” is an average but emotionally satisfying production in its field. In other words, the kind where you can watch and then move on to another series, but some scenes can remain in your mind. If you are familiar with Korean BL series, you shouldn’t expect big surprises, but it can wrap you up with its lovely atmosphere, softly progressing pace, and visual serenity.

The story developing around art, trust, and personal fragilities tells two characters both completing and healing each other. 10 episodes. Each episode is 35 minutes and slightly exceeds my watch time limit. Official broadcasters are iQIYI, TVING. If you want, you can also look on MyDramaList.

Cast and Character: very briefly

  • Cha Seo Won → Yun Tae Jun: An introverted, fragile but at the same time strong character trying to survive with art. Due to the breaks in his past, he struggles to trust people. However, Ji Won Yeong’s sincerity and attention-filled approach will slowly begin to dissolve Tae Jun’s walls.
  • Gong Chan → Ji Won Yeong: A character acting with the fear of losing his job, initially acting interest-oriented, but confronting his real emotions over time. Won Yeong’s warmth and devoted attitude, while filling the silent voids in Tae Jun’s life, will also make his own internal conflicts visible.

Curator's Note

The love story blended with art brings the audience together with a sweet romance, even if it does not deepen too much. A conventional but emotional series, satisfying in terms of visuals and atmosphere.
