Semantic Error (2022): The Love of Opposite Personalities

시맨틱 에러 - Mandatory cooperation triggers the beginning of an unexpected love. Love begins with a logical error.

Semantic Error is a 2022, South Korean-made novel adaptation university youth-themed BL series. The series progresses in an enemies to lovers dynamic. It tells the adventure of two opposite university students discovering their feelings, adapting to the environment, and accepting their sexual identity.

Unlike typical Asian series, instead of luxury cars, actors with flawless makeup, and magnificent lives, the series offers bicycles wandering through backstreets, plain student houses, and a natural atmosphere, and I liked this cinematography very much. This simplicity makes the series more sincere and realistic.

If you like watching South Korean-style BL drama, this production is just for you. Also having a movie version, Semantic Error is one of the quite important productions for boys’ love culture. It also has a recognition due to being a novel (webtoon) adaptation. I definitely recommend you to watch it. Without forgetting, you can also look at the production Semantic Error The Movie, which is the movie version of the mini-series. Now let’s move on to the details.

Semantic Error (2022) South Korean BL Series Plot:

I mentioned above that Semantic Error is adapted from the web novel of the same name. The series begins with Chu Sang Woo, whom Jang Jae Young, who endangered his graduation by failing to complete the group assignment at school, meets while trying to understand the reasons.

While looking for a game designer, Chu Sang Woo coincides with Jae Young by chance. This duo continues on their way with a different goal without knowing each other. However, over time Jae Young discovers that Sang Woo is a designer who has the necessary features for game design.

Now they will tolerate each other based on a win-win relationship. Both of them question each other’s methods and approaches. Side characters Min Soo and Jin Ho soften the tension between them and add a humorous air to the story.

Sang Woo is an extremely organized, distant, and rule-bound person. However, after starting to work with Jae Young, the relationship between them evolves. They start to learn trusting and harmony. Jae Young will start to conquer the heart of Sang Woo, who seemed harsh and arrogant at first, and this development will hook you to the series. The duo becomes closer to each other during the game’s design process, and the attraction between them slowly turns into love. In this process, both characters begin to touch each other’s lives in an important way. While the distrust of one turns into trust, the other learns to express himself.

Sang Woo will be affected by Jae Young’s open-minded and flexible approach; Jae Young, on the other hand, realizes Sang Woo’s sincerity and loyalty. In this process, it sometimes peaks the romantic tension between them. These ups and downs and internal conflicts will hook you to the series.

Review and Commentary

We can say it is one of the best among South Korean-made BL series on university, youth love. Semantic Error differs from series made for light viewing of this genre, especially with its minimal structure, short episodes, and durations. As I said above, unlike other Asian series, here the audience witnesses modest students and their ordinary lives instead of luxurious lives.

This natural approach keeps the series in a sincere atmosphere that does not disturb its viewer, at least the cinematography and editing I like is in this form. Also, the addition of themes like gaming, coding, and technology removes the series from being just a love story and offers a broader narrative. Love being a “logical error” and being told with reference to the “semantic” error in coding is also very subtle.

The chemistry of the lead actors, the conflict of opposite characters, and the development born from this conflict is a familiar cliché, but the narration is very good. Even if they constantly display an aggressive attitude towards each other, you will also understand that these attitudes are actually a reflection of love and an effort to break their shells.

Semantic Error, unlike classic BL series, offers the audience a more realistic, sincere, and in-depth relationship; I can say this depth is the duo breaking their shells, being extroverted, and learning communication. When compared to classic Asian series, this production also deserves to be a “cult” with its simplicity and naturalness. Especially the “screaming” female fans and quite sterile university environments in Thai university-themed BL series are always boring and idol-focused.

If you are also bored with the monotony of traditional Thai series, this series will offer you a refreshing experience; isn’t the diversity of our experiences what is important anyway? Love sometimes begins and grows in moments when it is not understood. In this series as well, love starting with a “semantic error” expresses itself correctly over time. Wrong codes are deleted and correct ones are written in their place. ❤️
