You Make Me Dance | Love and Passion Brought by Rhythm

Self-discovery, confronting suppressed feelings, and encounters turning into an unexpected love are the subject of the drama.

I like minimalist, South Korean BL series. There are no crowded scenes or fake acting. Especially university BL stories started to go completely nonsense. You Make Me Dance is actually a story of being courageous a bit beyond self-discovery. I also liked the dance metaphor. Dance figures are human’s reflection of themselves. Actually, dance is a language of communication. The mirror neurons in our brain always try to imitate dance figures. When we see someone dancing, we immediately get restless. In the series as well, dance actually functions to move emotions.

You Make Me Dance: 2021 Plot and Summary

20-year-old Song Shi On is an ambitious youth who is preparing for a big ballet show, but is quite tossed around in life. Due to his irregular life, economic troubles, and emotional ups and downs, his performance gradually decreases. His rivals have passed him and passing the eliminations seems even harder now. However, Shi On winning the auditions is not only reaching his dreams, but also the only way out for him to pay off his debts.

Right at this moment, a face from the past appears: Jin Hong Seok. Jin Hong Seok, who is tasked with collecting Shi On’s debt to the loan shark, starts living in the same house with him to get the money. Yet, the duo had met on a bus three years ago – they remember this over time. Their initially tense, cold, and distant relationship gradually turns into mutual understanding, and then into love.

Hong Seok is not just a collector; over time he becomes someone who completes the missing piece in Shi On’s life. Shi On, on the other hand, relearns not only how to dance, but also love thanks to him. He prepares for the auditions with great determination, in this process he both pays his debt and finds the true owner of his heart. The name he gives to his dance performance in the finale summarizes everything: You Make Me Dance. Because this dance turns into a dance he performs with his lover – the person who once forcibly entered his life but earned a place in his heart.

Shi On’s past abandoned by his mother left big wounds in his inner world. But thanks to Jin Hong Seok, he starts to feel loved and belonging for the first time. This love is not just a relationship; it becomes a beginning where his existence is rewritten.

What I Want to Say About the BL Drama

Review and Commentary

BL is an emotionally intense production themed with internal transformation, appealing to young viewers and young adults. Although BL seems like a snack with its short duration among gay love, lover-themed series, the underlying messages are quite deep. While lack of love is handled as one of the most fundamental existential problems of human beings, suppressed feelings, social pressures, and invisible pressures of orientations are also processed courageously in the series.

People not being able to be themselves because of the norms imposed by society shows that we still haven’t completed our mental evolution. However, the “true self” inside us is always somewhere there, waiting for us to find it. This series tells exactly this: Finding one’s own identity, making peace with it, and realizing that one is worth loving. Value yourself, bring to existence and live who you are, not the life others prescribe for you.

There is no need to write too much, or to make deep analyses. LGBT individuals are constantly provoked, excluded, and declared enemies. This causes LGBT individuals to shut themselves down or, on the contrary, to be aggressive and hostile. The duo’s inability to express their feelings easily in the drama shows that as humanity, we are perhaps still lacking in understanding the other.

Everything consists of reflections formed by electrical signals between chemicals of the human memory and brain. Changing all our reality and perceptions is also in our hands.

If I return to BL again; in the drama, the relationship between Shi On and Jin Hong Seok moves on the axis of passion, mutual understanding, and personal development. Broadcasting Platform of the Series: Viki. More Info: Available on mydramalist. Like actors. The drama whose Original Name is 유 메이크 미 댄스 is 8 episodes. Each episode is very short, only 10 minutes, and this will not tire you while watching.

Curator's Note

A self-development, self-discovery story where the dance metaphor is used. In my opinion, it is one of the good BL stories that can be watched. When a human accepts their true feelings and finds their true self, they realize they are living. You should watch this production.
