The Edge of Horizon, original title: อรุณรุ่ง, is a Thai BL series. Actually, the series handles romance between rich, poor, noble, and servant within a historical period theme that we have seen examples of more or less until now. Of course, political events and turmoil are abundant in the series as well.
Actually, I was a bit indecisive about starting and watching the series. Because so many similar series have been made that after a certain point, it becomes like a repetition of each other. However, even if the difference in social status between gay childhood friends forces them apart, this gap closes years later. If you like historical period BL series, you can watch it if you don’t have high expectations; it’s not a very bad series to me, but it’s not original either.

Summary and Subject of the Series
The series begins with a secret love between Thin, a privileged prince of the royal family, and Phob, a servant living in the palace or the same mansion, who grew up together and have never been apart since childhood.
From this beginning, it is a forbidden love. Phob, as a very successful and intelligent person, is sent to school by his master Prince Vasin (Thin’s father) and receives a good education.
When the love between the two friends is revealed, this is a matter of honor and pride beyond just the slave-master distinction or social status difference. The duo separates.
In the series, the useless older brother Chat is after his brother and Phob. He is especially someone who is always jealous of his brother. Up to this point, the series is actually full of well-known clichés.
11 years will pass. Phob studies in France and returns as a captain. This is actually a very familiar theme. BL will continue with romantic and political tension at this point. Siam is an uncolonized and sovereign place as a buffer zone between France and England. However, while the royal family and nobles live in abundance during this period, the people are broke and hungry.
Faced with this situation, while the military unit Phob is a member of plans a coup, Phob starts having a relationship again with his unforgettable lover Thin. This is impossible both politically and for the honor of the family. Also, both are caught between political turmoil, traditionalists, and innovators.
On the other hand, Chat, as an unsuccessful prince, continues to come between the two in the series. As I said, while Phob, who jumps social status in the series, gets involved in conspiracies to overthrow the rule of the nobles and for equality, Thin is on the opposite side. This tension is both the separation and holding-onto-each-other points for the lovers. Actually, the whole drama moves forward on this foundation. There will be criticisms below as well. There is a bit too much drama in the series. Especially the Prince Thin character is a very weak personality. The dramatic separation of the couple is also very cliché. Most likely, you won’t watch a similar period series for a long time; at least, that’s what I will do.
Series Review and Commentary
The series has a narrow environment as a historical and period production. The prince’s mansion is a venue we have memorized from BL series by now. I know making a historical period series is not easy, but in some scenes, the historical texture didn’t seem to sit right.
Prince Thin is a very naive, quiet, and weak character. As a viewer, you will want him to be more dominant. Their chemistry and tension with Phob are balanced. Even though years have passed, the actors staying the same didn’t work. There should have been different actors when they experienced their first love in high school years.
The series is in the familiar servant-master dynamic. I’m sure you’ve watched dozens of similar BLs. I think it should go beyond this dynamic by now. In the series, the older brother’s ambition, his humiliation by his father, and his jealousy add a bit of movement to the series. But the most important theme, in my opinion, is the effect of Thin and Phob’s political tension and being on opposite sides on their relationship. Like enemies falling in love with each other. On the other hand, you will also feel the romance between Princess Siri, whom Thin is wanted to be married off to, and the journalist woman. This theme also felt very cliché to me.
Is the Series Worth Watching?
After so much criticism, I say the series is worth watching. Even if it doesn’t have a very original subject, if you like historical period boys’ love, the series will do. But if you don’t watch it, you won’t lose anything. There is no legendary love like that. But the characters are cute and compatible. 11 episodes and each episode is almost 1 hour.
