Netflix’s 2025 production series Chosen Home, which basically handles the LGBT subject, is not a BL. Boys’ love has now become an industry producing sub-contracted content. It has become an identical, meaningless “idol”-focused consumption commodity, a “fast food”.
The answer to the question of what makes the series special is actually hidden in the answer it gives to the question of whether a blood bond is necessary to build a home and be a family. Of course, if you ask which is the most legendary LGBTQ+ series regarding building a family, in my opinion, it is the Fosters series.
This series is not just a home-building story for you either. You will find the purest emotions and a romantic comedy theme in it. Of course, the series also narrates giving up our conservative thoughts and the importance of living life in love and inner peace. Who we are is not hidden in sexual identities; it is hidden in our perspective on life and how much we reflect our true selves.
💬 I do not intend to extract a summary for this series. My goal is to share my experiences. I know that series with youth subjects and handsome actors are generally preferred. Whereas the important thing is being able to get the messages in the series. Chosen Home was an LGBT-themed series whose new episode I waited for every week and enjoyed while watching. It was a slice of life, a story from the existence of different people. It pleased me.

A Tiny Summary and Plot of the Series
High school teacher Saku, who is homeless and lives in a car, is dealing with the problems of his student Hotaru. Hotaru’s mother embezzles money from where she works and disappears. And Hotaru has buried the money in the garden. Her father, on the other hand, is after the money and he too is someone who does not care about his daughter.
In all this chaos, Hatano Genichi will meet Saku. The first meeting is quite simple. It consists of exchanging a few words. Since Saku broke up with his lover, he no longer has one. On the other hand, Genichi also moves to a new place. Both of them need a home and a lover, and in a broader sense, a family.
Genichi and Hotaru will make an agreement between them. Genichi will play the father role. Thus, she has found a father representation for herself at school. On the other hand, Genichi and Saku will meet again, and he will now have a continuous dialogue with the teacher as a “girl’s father”. Meanwhile, a sweet romance begins between the duo.
Both of them want to build a home, get married, and officially live their gay identities and be visible. In the following episodes, the fake fatherhood situation will be revealed, and what with the mother and father, the lost money, and the ex-lover, the series will progress towards a complete tangle of relationships and a theme of finding oneself.
Series Review and Commentary
Aside from Japanese BL series made for fan service, the production, which offers you a real and vivid LGBT story, tells the sweet struggle of being a family and building a home. Being homosexual is quite difficult; through this theme, universal topics such as prejudices and gaining acceptance are also handled very successfully.
The main important point in the series is: far from all kinds of prejudices, we must only live the person we are. Is a blood bond necessary to build a home or be a family? You will find the answer to this question in the series too. Especially in the final episodes, young homosexual high school student Kishibe Kazuki questioning his feelings, actually learning to be friends with the sexual identity he discovered and that this is not a crime or a sin, and his conversation with the duo is also one of the most emotional scenes of the series.
Not only through gay characters, but Hotaru’s war of existence is also interesting. She is a high school girl whose parents have separated, and she is now tired of her parents’ selfishness. Hotaru has chosen not her opportunistic parents who see no one but themselves, but two homosexual adults as her parents. She found the sacrifice of being a family, the support for each other, and of course that love. Again, from the side characters, the ex-lover has also renewed himself. He too is dreaming of building a home for himself. The good-for-nothing father has also begun to undergo a change.
The series is completely far from exaggerated acting. The lead roles are quite successful, and the middle-aged actors are in much “sweeter and purer” characters than the overly dressed, pointlessly made-up actors in fan service series. The locations are also very natural. You see the real streets, avenues, and houses of Japan. The series does not shove ultra-luxurious living spaces into the viewer’s eyes in isolated places. There is a wonderful story right in front of your eyes.
My final thoughts on the series
Chosen Home, or by its original name ぼくたちん家, is a Netflix original series grounded on being a family and building a home. The importance of the series is also that it explains that there is only love and acceptance at the foundation of the family.
I cannot pass without saying how superficial the “family” debates in our country and the pressures (through family) on LGBT individuals are, especially. If there is love and sacrifice, there is happiness there. Conservatives, by imposing their own understanding of family and lifestyle on LGBT individuals they deem weak, are actually committing cruelties that will go down in history.
