Deep In is a Chinese-made BL released in 2026. Perhaps its story contains clichés in some aspects, but it still has a passionate story. More precisely, there is a story within a story. There is a double-layered boys’ love. 12 episodes, and each episode lasts an average of 42 minutes. It felt a bit long to me.

The series is built on the acting industry. Zhang Zhun, who wants to become a professional actor, attends auditions. Meanwhile, he passes the audition for the series where star actor Zhen Xin will play the lead role.
Although Zhang Zhun has acted before, he has not previously worked on a big project with a star actor with whom he will share the lead role. The producers and director are also uneasy. Since there will be plenty of intimate scenes in the series, the duo would stay in the same room for two weeks. This part will feel cliché to you. We have watched many BLs with a similar structure.
Tension between the duo is at its peak; star actor Zhen Xin has an inflated ego. Zhang Zhun, on the other hand, is a modest person who wants to rise. The two co-stars are now ready for filming at the end of 15 days.
A series within a series: Deep In
Now the drama filming begins. The series is practically like the two actors’ alternative reality. This theme is also a bit cliché because I know we watched similar series. Still, the love affairs in the filmed drama, the emergence of real emotions are practically like a copy of the two actors’ real lives.
Zhen Xin is in the role of Dr. Fang Chi in the drama. As a psychiatrist, the patient (Zhang Zhun) Gao Zhun who comes for treatment wants to overcome his traumas. As a result of an event he experienced, he assumes a timid identity, unable to stay in enclosed spaces. The doctor-patient relationship turns into love over time. Just like the relationship between Zhen Xin and Zhang Zhun.
Both characters are about to break up with their lovers in the drama. They rediscover their sexual identities. But there are problems they must overcome. While the drama filming continues in this manner, in the first layer outside the role, there are also the real lives of the duo.
The real world in the first layer
In the real world, Zhen Xin wants to break up with his lover. But this will not be easy. Being a famous person is not only about himself; within a chain extending to producers and advertisers, he has no preferences and choices of his own. The duo has a secret relationship. These relationships of theirs sometimes pass amidst harsh conflicts and hesitations.
Their love in their real worlds also motivates them for their characters in the drama. They are passionate in the drama as well. But when the duo’s love leaks out, the situation changes. Zhen Xin must consider not only himself, but also the career of Zhang Zhun, who is a new actor and will reach good places in the future. Announcing that they are gay and lovers means the end of their acting careers for them.
Series Review and Commentary
As I said at the beginning, I watched quite a lot of BL series on acting and actors. For example, the conflict between actors and producers, the dilemma of career or love is now cliché. The series having a two-layered story is not bad.
The emotional shifts in real life being the same as the doctor-patient relationship in the fiction was nice in my opinion. In both layers, there is giving up on their lovers and finding their real identities. In both, there is separation and a romance that does not go well.
The locations in the series are natural and not excessive. Only the story in the second layer is very disconnected and the drama set is inadequate. They could not reflect the drama filming and set atmosphere. Apart from this, the chemistry and harmony of the duo are good. The same traumas, the same deadlocks in both stories.
Is the Series Worth Watching?
Yes, it is worth watching. Especially if you read the novel, you will watch the series too. Globally, there is definitely an audience who read the novel. An average, curiosity-inducing, non-boring, fluent boys’ love. Instead of the familiar restricted romance in Chinese BL series, this time there are quite attractive and bold scenes.
