The South Korean mini BL series Tinted With You is a 2021-2022 production. Again, there is a fantastic time travel story. In BL series, time travel and waking up in a new body, with a new consciousness and personality, is quite beloved. Sometimes identical stories can be boring. But Tinted With You is romantic and emotional with its historical period theme and time travel. A watchable series.
Since series have no expiration date, and since the visuals and shoots are of good quality, it is a series that can always be watched. 8 episodes, and the episodes are 12 minutes, perfectly fitting the minimalist structure of K-BL. Tinted With You (2021-2022) BL Series Plot and Summary
Eun Ho, a young man living in the modern era and deeply involved with art, is teleported back in time to the era of kingdoms thanks to a painting he encounters at an exhibition he visits. However, this journey is not just a coincidence; a painting he must complete and a destiny he must resolve await him.
The prince has been excluded by his own family and society due to his sexual orientation, pushed into loneliness and the threat of death. Beside him, there is only his loyal bodyguard. The arrival of Jung Eun Ho is like a ray of hope in this trapped universe. Although initially thought to be an enemy, the bond between them strengthens over time.
Belonging to different times and different worlds, these two young men find themselves in a seemingly impossible love. During this process, Eun Ho needs to complete the painting; otherwise, he will not be able to return. However, the matter is no longer just returning home. Now, over there, within the past, there is someone he loves.
While the relationship between the prince and Eun Ho develops slowly but palpably, the series presents the idea that “love knows no time” to its audience with a plain but effective narrative. In the finale, with the completion of the painting, Eun Ho returns to the present day and begins a new life with his lover whom he brought from the past. The bodyguard character remains in the temporal void; however, it is implied by a mysterious figure that he too will be brought to the future.
Tinted With You Review – Is the Series Worth Watching?
A watchable series for viewers looking for something different, especially those bored with classic school BL series. Tinted With You can literally be preferred as a minimalist series that does not tire the viewer. Since series have no expiration date, the 2021 date does not matter. The series addresses love’s resistance against time, space, and societal prejudices. I liked this theme very much. Especially the story of a prince excluded because of his homosexual orientation explains very well the marginalization that has continued throughout history. I liked these subtexts of the series.
Instead of the rich kids and cliché stories set in the same school that we frequently see in BL series, even if this production leans a bit into fantasy with time travel, I think its narration and romance are very well-placed. I also liked the subtext that even time cannot hinder love. Although the series is not technically perfect, I loved the romance within the idea and atmosphere it presents. The series narrates universal and the most familiar human conditions such as youth, the discovery of love, and the search for identity.
Apart from this, acting, shoots, and technical details are not important to me. Since I do not like series focused on actor “idols” shot in sterile environments, Tinted With You felt more sincere to me.
In the modern world where Eun Ho comes from, he is more outspoken and freer in terms of his sexual orientation. Heon’s world woven with political pressures is not suitable for a gay prince. Thanks to Eun Ho, Heon relearns both emotional and human trust. You will like this theme very much, I liked it. Eun Ho will also realize that what he feels toward the prince is not just pity, but a genuine closeness.
Political tensions, the difficulties of being a prince—they will overcome all of them with trust, self-acceptance, and love. Park Jun Hee – Jung Eun Ho: A young art student dragged from the present to the past; a curious, sensitive character with a strong emotional world. Yoo Hyun Woo – Lee Heon: A noble and lonely prince whose throne was taken away, trying to survive. His fragile but proud mood, struggling to trust, will practically soar with Eun Ho.
It is not a very complex series. It has a mini format. No need to write too much. A watchable series.
