Sotus (2016) Plot and Review
Accepted as the milestone of Thai BL series, SOTUS is a production that shows how a story that begins with strict discipline turns into a sincere love. University traditions and the harshness of the hazing period cannot prevent love. No matter how tough they may look, the transformation in the inner worlds of the characters will hook you to the series. The series is not just romantic; it is also a classic about belonging, respect, and courage that you will watch. It is the purest and highest quality example of the classic engineering students’ conflict.
Engineering students are forced to go through a ruthless disciplinary system called SOTUS. The upperclassmen (seniors) push the limits of the new engineering freshmen to prepare them for the profession. But sometimes their unforgiving and harsh attitudes lead to constant arguments. The system is passed down from generation to generation, so that each year’s freshmen will give the exact same training to the newcomers as seniors in the following years. This is the symbol of harmony and cooperation between the gears. Engineering education is the job of the people who will make it right.
Kongpob, who actually wanted to study business but chose to study engineering to help with the family business, and his group of friends must go through SOTUS. The head hazer of the system that year is a 3rd-year student named Arthit.

The freshmen go through a lot of hardships during this extremely demanding training process. They deal with unreasonable tasks. Meanwhile, Kongpob—who is rebellious and objects to everything but is equally ambitious—starts to develop feelings for Arthit, the senior and that year’s head of Sotus. Even though a very fierce battle begins between them, in reality, both of them experience the exact same feelings inside.
Ambitious and never giving up, Kong strives both to pass the freshman hazing to become a good engineer and to win over the tough and uncompromising team leader Arthit, whom he has liked from the very beginning.
On the other hand, M experiences heartbreak while having feelings for May. May will receive a negative response from Kong, to whom she confesses her love. Meanwhile, the strong bond and sacrifice among friends, and the relationship between the senior 3rd-year student Prem and the freshman Wad, are presented as a side story in the series.

Sotus Series Review and Comments
The legendary production that introduced the Thai BL genre to the whole world and practically restarted the boys’ love era in its wake.
This novel-adapted BL series is one of the cult Thai productions. It is one of the first series to be watched for those just starting in this genre. In the series, character development and the progression of the plot are highly successful. What made the series so famous and synonymous with the BL genre is undoubtedly the harmony and chemistry between Kongpob and Arthit. The series explains themes like bowing down to hardships and never giving up on getting what you want just as well as the character chemistry itself.
Instead of a romance and passionate love that sparks instantly in a university setting, you will watch a slow-burn, idealistic BL. This is exactly the execution that puts the series among these classics. Love is not something easily obtained. Arthit, who has been defeated by love before, is unsure of his feelings. Although this uncertainty causes the duo to stay away from each other for a certain period, there is no giving up. An engineer never gives up.
The series is also a much more watchable production featuring natural actors, unexaggerated acting, and an absence of screaming fans around, instead of the heavily made-up, unrecognizable faces we are used to in Thai BL series. The school environment is very plain. The cinematography and colors are spot on. You might only say that the school environment could have been a bit more lively.

In the series, Kongpob—who is both a freshman and constantly getting punished while initially receiving no response to his love—never disrespects his seniors or his crush Arthit; moreover, he does everything to prove that he belongs to engineering and to his lover for the sake of trust, discipline, and progress. There is absolutely no disrespect; there is patience and waiting.
💬 The unforgettable line of the series: “I will make you my wife (girlfriend); because they say what belongs to your lover is also yours. If I make you my wife, your gear badge will also become mine.”
